L 5? l 5 - Q' ww' 1 ll 1 '11, f l Although the heat was stifling in the gym, the spirits of the participants in the Webb School Commencement Exercises were exuberant as the long-awaited moment approached. After the self-conscious seniors marched in to Mrs. Karen Young's organ accompaniment, Chaplain Richard Paddon delivered the invoca- tion. Following a few words of welcome by Mr. Webb, Sarah Walls delivered the valedictory address. Mr. Mackay presented awards to Patti Obenour and Chip Denton, the Lower School girl and boy with the highest averages. Mr. Snodgrass presided over the Upper School awards: Sarah Walls, appropriately enough, received the Scholarship Award for Girls, and David Chernoff earned the John W. Green Award for Scholarship: Marguerite Burdette received the beautiful Margaret and Leonard Scheuer- mann Trophy for Scholarship, Integrity, and Graciousness of Spirit, and Mike Downing won the S. J. Chapman Award for Leadership, Scholarship, and lntegrity. On behalf of the Webb School Trustees, Mr. Herbert H. Slatery, Jr., accepted from Kevin Zirkle a large photograph of the new stone entranceway, repre- senting the gift of the Class of '71. Two numbers by the Webb School Chorus preceded the eloquent and thought-provoking Commencement Address by Dr. George K. Schweitzer, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee. Finally, the great moment arrived, the graduates received their traditional Bibles and were transformed into Webb alumni. 43
