After attending a summer cheerleading clinic at Tennessee Tech, where they were awarded a blue ribbon and the spirit stick for outstanding enthusiasm, the squad re- turned to school in the fall with many ideas to promote student spirit at Webb. The new X periods provided them an opportunity to introduce new cheers and to stimulate student support for the teams. However, much of the credit for arousing team support must be given to David Stair and his crew, who faithfully brought their cannon to every game and added much to the entire season. This year the 1970-71 Lower School cheerleaders had a great year cheering to empty bleachers. The number of people at the games was astounding. lt included the team, the cheer- leaders, and the two coaches. lFlahll We did get a lot of practice during the season. During the games we ate that good Webb popcorn, but when our mouths were not full, we really yelled. Nlost of the time we were being yelled at by the team to get off the field, being run over by the referee, or knocked down by the football. All in all, we had a lot of fun in what proved to be a great experience for all of us. and Sparkle at Home Games 34

The money paid for the job lS100l went to the school to be used on the football field next year. Most meet- ings were for inspiration, and held at club members' homes. The meetings were led by the sponsor, Coach Don Tarvin, and the club president, Mike Milner. Probably one of the best meetings was held at U.T., at the Local Rally, where U.T. Coach Bill Battle spoke. The Letterman's Club grew this year in number. With the help of this expanded membership and the leadership of Coach Don Tarvin and President Mike Milner, the club undertook its annual Christmas Project. After gathering canned foods from the students for several weeks and purchasing some other food, the club met on Dec. 23 for a breakfast and short devotional. Then they proceeded to the Karns area to deliver the baskets of food to needy families. The entire club agreed that this was their, most successful venture of this nature, and they look forward to doing it again next year. The W girls aided the Girls' Athletic Committee in the big job that lay ahead of them. The high point of the year was Dads' Night. There were games for the daughters and their daddies, including softball, volleyball, and swimming. Then Annetha served a dinner of barbecued chicken, salad, and rice, finished off by vanilla ice cream wlchocolate topping. Each class then did a skit or a song. The final event of the night was the award of the Terry Bailey Trophy for sportsmanship to Janie Bankston and Rhonda Stevens and the announcement of the new W girls - Melissa Gallivan, Betty Greer, Linda Reeder, Becky Pike, Polky Tarwater, Barbara Bellomy, Edith Dunford, Rebecca Garcia, and Lisa Mayo. l ' W -'X ' 'E- fg - , 1 l in 1. ,,...g -- .
