, L, The Lower School participated in many of the same activi- ties as the Upper School. Among these were the Lower School Drama Club, which, under the sponsorship of lVlrs. Dilworth, presented several plays directed by Jesters members. A newly formed club, the Ecology Club, conducted a paper drive and a trash cleanup on Cherokee Boulevard. The club members spent much of the year getting organized and found them- selves hampered by a common Webb malady, student apathy. Also active was the staff of The Spirit of '76, a seventh grade newspaper under the leadership of Nliss Hudson. The papers were sold at an exorbitant rate l15 centsl to upperclassmen, and featured interviews, news items, cartoons, and crossword puzzles. The Lower School Science Club held monthly meet- ings, each one dealing with some different aspect of science, but the highlights of the year were trips to the Lost Sea and the Oak Ridge Atomic Museum. Finally, there was the Chess Club, alias the lVlath Club, which submerged after a rift with the Administration, only to surface in lVlr. Prater's room under a new guise. So much for Lower School intrigue. LEFT PAGE: UPPER LEF7? MATH CLUB OFFICERS: Steve Minor, Secretary- Treasurerf Scott Overall, Vice- President: Kevin O'Kelley, President. Original Vocal Style and Arrangement Improves Chorus The Webb School Chorus lGlee Clubl enjoyed a very suc- cessful season under the competent and inspiring direction of lVlr. Walter H. Hawthorne. A novelty for the Chorus was its first musical concert tour, including excursions to Shannon- dale Retirement Community and Children's Hospital, as well as special nocturnal Christmas and' Spring concerts. The pro- grams included works by Beethoven, Bach, Schubert, lVlendeIs- sohn, and Sibelius. Because of lVlr. Hawthorne's musical versa- tility, the Chorus was also able to branch out into many types of music. Even though the Chorus had fewer than twenty members, it was able to perform music written for groups of much greater size. All of the success of the Chorus can be attributed to the hard work and sincerity of our combination conductor, bass soloist, and friend, Nlr. Hawthorne. Those who worked under him will always be grateful for having had the opportunity. They feel that Webb's loss is the University of Tennessee's gain.
