With the fine leadership of Captains Campbell and Glover, the coaching of Mrs. Barry Brindley, the chauffeuring of Miss Kay Higgins, and the outstanding playing ability of the other team members, the boys' tennis team had another very suc- cessful year. The team had victories over Oak Ridge, Bearden, West, McMinn County, and Maryville, but lost a very close match to Jefferson City, 5-4. The team not only ended with a 5-1 record, but finished second in the city and sent Sterchi Morton and Bill Chesney to the State Tournament. Many strong players graduate this year, but under the leadership of Sterchi Morton and other prospects, next year's team ought to i be able to meet the challenge. i The girls' tennis team, following upon the heels of a team I E which was No. 1 in the state last year, found their own season rather disappointing. Sporting wins over Jefferson City, i Powell, Bearden, Maryville, McMinn County during the season, they placed second in the District and Regionals, behind West, their only defeaters in the season. Jenny Glover did excep- tionally well in the City meet and went to the quarter-finals. Rebecca Garcia was the year's highlight, sent to the finals in Nashville. All of the members except Captain Nancy Nixon and Mascot Kay Higgins are returning next year. The team all agree that there are some very good seventh and eighth grade prospects, leading to the prediction that the team ought to play well enough to win the District and Regionals next year. l Girls' Tennis Team Sends Rebecca to State Competition UPPER LEF 71' Jenny exhibits the Glaverian Style. Composed of seniors Steve Bailey and Flick Oliver, juniors Charles Slatery and Tom Evans, and sophomore Andy Lane, the Spartan linksmen struggled through a disappointing season. Highlights of the season were a shutout victory over Far- ragut, and three decisive wins over rival West. In their final win over the Rebels, the Spartans were led by Rick Oliver's even- par round of 36 over the difficult back nine at Fox Den Country Club. ln the final match of the season, Bailey, Oliver, and Slatery showed the type of play of which the team was capable by sharing medalist honors in a fourway match with Oak Ridge, Rockwood, and Kingston. With 1972 bringing the return of Evans, Lane, and Slatery, the team can perhaps look forward with optimism to a suc- cessful season.
