At the beginning of the spring, it was doubtful that there would be enough people to field a track team. However, through the recruiting of Coach McClain, as well as the dedication of returning numbers, the team sprinted to an overall 7-2 record and fourth place in the city. Big wins of the season were over Central, Catholic, Lake City, Halls, Rule, South, and always tough Austin-East. The only Spartan de- feats were at the hands of Fulton and Morristown West. In the KIL meet Webb did very well, finishing a strong fourth. Placing high in the meet were Hank Walter, 5th in the 100-yard dash and 3rd in the shot put, Jim Haslam, 2nd in the 220-yard dash, and Randy Blake, 2nd in the pole vault. The 440-relay team, composed of Chip Oakley, David Rose, Wal- ter, and Haslam, finished first. The 880-relay team, consisting of Sam Watson, Oakley, Walter, and Haslam, also took top honors. The school record-setting 2-mile relay team, composed of James Kile, Al Vesser, John Smith, and Mike Elliott, finished fourth in this meet. ln the District Meet the Spartans finished fifth through strong performances by Walter, Haslam, Blake, and the relay teams. Also adding strength in running competition were Ingram, McMurry, and Daniels, while Fisher, Kern, and Carlson were strong in the field events for the Spartans.

Junior High Track Sets Records in Winning Season To win or not to win - that was no question. With well-oiled running events and outstanding field events, Webb's Junior Spartans won three out of four meets this season and showed the most promise in the last five years. The relay teams were highlighted by the undefeated 880-relay team, which, in its best effort, shattered the former Lower Schoolstandard by more than two seconds with a 43.2-second combination of John Kreis, Al Vesser, Dean Smith, and John Schubert. The mile relay team lAl Vesser, David Bradley, Doug Traver, and Marsh Frerel set a new record at 4:04. Kenan Smith, Carlton lVlathes, Richie DeSelm, and Greg Preston all worked hard on their 440-relay team. Relay running events were not the only asset to Webb's work this year. Individual runners also shone in their events. In the 100-yard dash, eighth grader Dean Smith, in his first hundred-dash season, missed the record by three tenths of a second. He will be back next season! Richie DeSelm and Al Vesser both did well in the hurdles, as also did 800-man Hugh Slatery and milers Robert Roach, Ray Tucker, and Kevin Kile. Field events also shone with Tiny lVlarsh Frere, who was undefeated in the discus with a season best of 133' 0 lan eighth graderll and lost only once in the shot put lseason best 44' 10 l. Eighth grader John Schubert jumped in mid- seventeens at the broadjumping pit and set a record of 5' 4M in the high jump. Blessed with few injuries, Coach Ken Brewster's Junior Spartans racked up a winning season by beating Farragut, Young, and Powell. Barely losing to Athens Jr. High, the Webb team set many new records in their final meet - and six of the 11 members of the team will be back for next year's meets! 110 sh' I I , . ,.,.
