Junior High Basketball, 1971, was under a new set-up which replaced the old three- team system with a Varsity and a B Team. The senior Baby Spartans had difficulty finding the winning touch against a rough schedule and compiled a 2-15 season. De- spite their relatively poor record, there were bright spots in the play of Buss Breeding, Marsh Frere, and John Kreis, and, in fact, in the overall hustle of the entire team. The Junior High B Team displayed some fine basketball, but lacked consistency in moving to a record of five wins against eleven losses. Individual standouts were Dean Smith, Larry Daniels, Eric Grigsby, and Robert lVlorris. With starters returning next year, the junior high porgram should continue to improve. LQ 7F'1 xivi wif? .Y The 1970-71 Spartan basketball team suffered through a dismal season. Though spirit was high before the season began, the Spartans could not quite seem to put it all together in games. Low points of the season included humiliating losses to West, Farragut, and Young, while impressive encounters were the first win ever at Jacksboro, double victories over Webb at Bell Buckle, and a revenge win over Young. Captaining the team were 3-year Ietterman Hank Walter and Senior Robin Hinton. Bill Mackebee, Chip Neblett, Arthur Fowler, and Tom lnklebarger were seniors who saw frequent action. Post-season honors went to Sterchi lVIorton, who was selected all A- Division. Standout juniors returning next year are Nlorton, Jim Haslam, Tom Fisher, and Charles Slatery. With these juniors and the help from a record-setting B-Team, Coach Don Tarvin hopes next year's season will be somewhat brighter. 103 -,v... , ,Hi . .7 rt . K, 1

V530 34 ,Q Comeback Winning Streak Evens Out B-Team Season 105 A record-setting B-team highlighted this year's basketball program. After losing ten of its first eleven games, the team ripped off a sensational streak of ten wins. With wholehearted support from Coach Tarvin and Coach CL Lowery, the team set their sights on the B-team championship. However the bubble was burst by a talented Austin-East team in the first round. Supporting Charles Slatery and Tom Fisher were Gary Braden, Sammy lVlanning, Ed Sims, Bipper Walter, and Mackie Neblett. This talented group should add up to a successful varsity team next year.
