L.-,T -- gift- ,v .. - , - ., . an 'ft' , Sparked by great leadership from the team's five seniors, the 1970 football Spartans were able to overcome the lack of team depth and move to a winning season. Victories over Farragut and Gibbs set the stage for an early season showdown with upstart Rule. Trailing 14-7 late in the game, the Spartans, apparently beaten, took a Golden Bear kickoff and marched seventy yards to move within a point. With nothing but victory in mind, Webb passed for a two-point conversion and a 15-14 win. After an open date the Spartans were slowed by narrow defeats at the hands of Powell, South, and Karns. Spirits ran low till Webb bounced back with a satisfying win over neigh- boring rival West, and the following week upset favored Hix- son, of Chattanooga, 6-0. Plagued by injuries and sickness, the Big Green fell to Young in the season finale. Post-season honors were bestowed upon Captain Hank Wal- ter, who was selected All State: Steve Bailey, who was All K.F.L.g and Chip Oakley and Mike lVlilner, both of whom received divisional awards. Walter's acceptance of a grant-in-aid from the University of Tennessee marked the third straight year that one of Coach lVlcClain's Spartans has signed to play football at a major college. Eager to follow the example of this year's outstanding seniors, future captains Jim Haslam and Tom Evans anticipate leading the many returning players to another winning season.
