Our Presidmf IlC7A1'?J0 N APRIL 12, 19J,5, after the sudden death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, of Missouri, became President of the United States-the thirty-third President and the seventh Vice President ever to assume that high and responsible office. Son of a farmer, Mr. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884, but his home has been at Independence, Missouri, since his early childhood. A graduate of Independence High School, he held positions in banks as clerk and bookkeeper 3 but always felt the lure of life on the farm, Where he spent ten of his happiest years. In the Missouri National Guard, and as a captain of a Field Artillery battery overseas in World War I, Mr. Truman performed distinguished service to his country. In 1922 he was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court, and from 1926 to 1934 he was presiding judge, and made an excellent record of integrity and efficiency. Mr. Truman, elected United States Senator in 1934 and re-elected in 1940, rendered intelligent and loyal service in the Senate, and especially, as chairman of the Investi- gating Committee which bears his name, did he play a vital role in World War II in eliminating much of the War Waste. He Was elected Vice Presi- dent on the Roosevelt-Truman ticket in 1944. As President, he has assumed, courageously and patriotically, the most stupendous task that ever confronted a chief executive of this nation -the reconstruction of our own nation, rehabilitation of other nations, and Winning of World Peace, after the most devastating War in the history of mankind. President Truman's splendid business acumen, his good common sense, his unswerving devotion to duty will serve him Well now, as in the past. Hats off to The Gentleman from Missouri !
