Time to us means the date of the big game, or the days that are marked off in anticipation of the foreshadowing weekend, the impending tests, or the approaching commencement ceremony. We live in the present surrounded by daily routine and little recognize the importance of the events and activities which are so rapidly passing us by. Many of us have participated for the last time in such events, while others have seen only the beginning of those traditions. Our yearbook has its purpose in securing and then holding all of these scenes, for with the future will come the escape of these memories formulated during our high school years. One by one, they will become obscure in our minds replaced in turn by the forthcoming events of the next few years. It has been our hope that this 1960-1961 Quinault has captured and highlighted these memories. Time is not recalled by a period or season, but by the faces of friends, the thrill of winning the big game, or the sound of one's name, as diplomas are awarded on commencement day. DEDICATION This year, 1960-61, has been our year, and surely one we will all remember. It has been a year of surprising school spirit with enthusiasm never seen before in the history of Weatherwax. This school spirit was evident every day at Weatherwax, and it has been a contributing factor to the success of the year. This was also the year preceding the retirement of two of our beloved teachers, Mr. Fenenga and Mr. Quien. Mr. Fenenga started his teaching career in Silverton, Oregon, later moving to Montesano, where he taught and coached for eight years. He came to Aberdeen in 1929. Serving as basketball and track coach for eighteen years, Mr. Fenenga was the first basketball coach to send an Aberdeen team to a state tournament in Seattle. His teaching subjects have been sociology, economics, American History, and World History. Mr. Quien worked in the automotive trades for twenty years before he began teaching in our school. He started teaching in 1940 with a schedule of six periods of Auto Mechanics, and also supervised bus transportation until 1945. He has never missed a day in twenty-one years. We join together with the student body and faculty, in complimenting these two gentlemen for jobs well done. NOTES AND QUOTES ON 1960-61 Our high school life is not separate from life outside of school. We are a part of a community, a nation, and the world, both as individuals and as a group. The Quinault always has as its main purpose to record life at Weatherwax; this year we should, perhaps, take note of the out-of-school happenings that have affected our lives during the year. What was the world situation of 1960-61 as we hustled in and out of Weatherwax classrooms? What were the community and national issues of the year, the worrisome problems with which we and our parents were faced? What future did 1961 teenagers want, expect and plan for? STUDENT BODY PRESIDENTS MESSAGE The familiar shuffle of students between classes will soon be silenced until September. Various summer activities will, dominate the schedule. Many a river bank or lake shore will be inhabited by a reminiscent student recalling the 1960-61 school year, which has been an eventful and memorable one at Weatherwax. The school vear started with a much more active Senate supporting past activities and issuing new proposals. Student Body activity card subscriptions increased. A selling contest between the three classes based on a percentage of individual class sales was held with the losing class presenting an assembly. Some of the new proposals included a new Student Body card system, a program to sponsor a foreign exchange student, and a system to regulate academic tests, which is one of the most important proposals. Voting machines, through the courtesy of the Grays Harbor County Auditor's Office, were used in a mock national election in November, and again in May for student body elections. Student Body assemblies were well organized and entertaining. A very active, super-energized Pep Club stimulated enthusiasm during assemblies and sporting events with pep banners, posters and booster buttons. A special thanks is extended to the local and professional guests for their participation in our special assemblies. The band, orchestra, choir, dance band and glee club presentations of the annual Christmas, Swing, and Spring concerts were accepted by enthusiastic audiences with varied moods set to music. Recognition should be given the hard working Ocean Breeze staff, the Quinault personnel for their superior standards and quality, the Student Lounge, Lunch Room, Welcoming Dance, and Hall Traffic Committees, and the C.O.G. for their addition of the apple machine. Public service activities sponsored by the Senate and Board of Control members included the Thanksgiving baskets and the Sunshine Kids contributions. Student Body public service funstions were the March of Dimes and the World Clothing Drive. As Student Body president, I would like to thank the other members of the Board of Control, the Senate, and students, for their continued support and interest in promoting school affairs. I am sure the effectiveness of this year's Senate will be felt at Weatherwax for years to come by both the students and faculty. —7— WEATHERWAX ADMINISTRATION VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE The Class of '61 is to be commended for its active participation in student government directed toward the betterment of our school. As advisor of the Senate and Board of Control I have been impressed by our student leaders' awareness of school problems and their desire to correct them. This has not been a year of merely going through the routine motions of meetings followed by minutes. Our students have expressed constructive ideas and worked to develop them. Nor has this been confined to elected officers — often the initiative has come from the student body at large. Again this year Weatherwax students have been subjected to the inconvenience and annoyance of following daily schedules taking them to many widely scattered buildings. Realizing that this has been unavoidable with present facilities, they have pursued their academic and activity programs patiently and successfully. The Quinault staff and advisor can be justly proud of this very fine book, one that the graduating seniors can turn to for enjoyable memories. Mr. Peter Londahl PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE All of us eagerly await the appearance of the Quinault. It serves to mirror the year's many varied activities, experiences, and achievements. To the sponsor and staff, we express our thanks for an unusually fine product of their unstinting efforts. We hope that the values learned in the production of the book will carry over into their future. Thanks, faculty and student leaders, for a very successful year. Only through your efforts, patience, and understanding was it possible. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of '61. America needs your best. As a faculty, we hope that we have been instrumental in the development of your best so that you and America may be better served. Mr. Ben Curran DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE One of Ripley’s famous cartoons pictured a plain bar of iron worth $5. This same bar of iron when made into horse shoes would be worth $10.50. If made into needles it would be worth $3,285, and if turned into balance springs for watches, its worth becomes $250,000. The same is true of another kind of material— you. What will it be -horse shoes, needles, or springs? Doing things well in your high school career is a step toward doing things better as an adult. Our hope is that your accomplishments in the future will reflea favorably on your school and community. Good luck! Mr. Murray Taylor SCHOOL BOARD, left to right—Mr. Berken, Mr . SOURON Gardener ■ SENIORS OF 1960-61 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President, Andy Hagara Vice President, Bill LeRoy Secretary-Treasurer, Diana Ultican SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As Commencement day approached we seniors paused to reminisce our three years at Weatherwax. Our first thoughts were of our Sophomore year and the excitement of entrance into high school. Eva Jenkins presided during that first year with the able assistance of the other officers, Jeff Yearout, Vice-President, and Julie Anne McCaw, Secretary-Treasurer. The entire class supported the annual Sophomore Hop which was one not to be forgotten. We worked with the same enthusiasm on the March of Dimes Drive. Our Junior year began with the election of our officers, Jeff Yearout, Susie Wolff, and Joanne Janzik. The charity drive was our biggest project. We had a rummage sale, a bottle drive, and sold ads for the radio. With the help of the Senior class, we presented the Junior-Senior Ball, its theme being Blue Hawaii . Our final year at Weatherwax arrived at last. Andy Hagara, Bill LeRoy, and Diana Ultican were elected President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer respectively. Our senators were: Joanne Janzik, Pam Gaunt-lett, Andrienne Gudaz, Susie Wolff, John Banks, Jeff Yearout, John Mainio, and Rich Corsette. The Senior play, A Murder Has Been Arranged, provided an opportunity for Susan Bielski, Bob Pruitt, Karen Knutson, Ray Wasson, Sheila Marrs, Sharon Branford, John Hughes, John Mainio, and Joyce Wilkinson to display their dramatic talents. The class assembly and Junior-Senior Ball were fun-filled events. On the serious side were the March of Dimes Drives, awards assembly, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement. Now we depan, taking with us many memories of —14— the wonderful times we had in dear old Weatherwax.” DONALD GENE BARR (Don) — Choir 1; Swimming 1; Boys’ Fed. 1,2,3. As sophomores, we had been something new and different, bringing with us the customs and ways of junior high school. Our sophomore year was a period of adjustment — following the examples set by the upperclassmen. Next year we will be on top, endeavoring to set an example for the incoming sophomores and giving a helping hand to the juniors. To pilot us through the 1960-61 school year, we elected as our class officers: President, Chris Tobey; Vice President, Roger Faulkner; Secretary-Treasurer, Donna Enkerud. Their success as officers was largely due to the unanimous cooperation of the class senators and members of the class. Working successfully with the seniors, we presented, early in the spring, the annual Junior-Senior Ball, which was enjoyed by all. We presented a general assembly in February, in which we displayed our many and varied talents. This helped to make up for a deficit resulting from Student Body card sales. We look forward to our senior year with much enthusiasm, hoping to exceed the accomplishments and pleasures that we have experienced this year. —42— ROW I: Cole, Brodin, Cady, Bates, Boling, Barry, Alviar, Aldrich, Dixon. CLASS OF 1963 mm, rail SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS President, John Acker Vice President, Janice McNulty Secretary-Treasurer, Marcia Allen SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY We Sophomores entered Weatherwax last fall with little knowledge of the ways of high school, but immediately we began participating in the clubs, music groups, athletics and other activities. Early in the year, a meeting was held to elect the class officers. The leaders we chose were President, John Acker, Vice-President, Janice McNulty, and Secretary-Treasurer, Marcia Allen. The first event of the year was the annual Sophomore Hop, which was held on October 28. The theme, Harbor Lights, was carried out very effectively. The ships at sea, the lighthouse on the shore, and the city lights provided a natural, lifelike atmosphere to the affair. Another event, in which we participated early in the spring, was the March of Dimes Drive. With the help of our officers and advisors, we organized a number of projects and worked hard to do our part in the campaign. Becoming accustomed to high school was rather trying for all of us, but we’ve certainly enjoyed our first year at Weatherwax. Next year, we hope to continue the friendships we have made, as well as to tackle bigger and better projects as juniors. ROW I: Cobain, Brown, Barnhart, Aro, Coffman, Creelman, Acker, Abbott. The purpose of the Council of Girls is to bring the girls of Weatherwax closer together through the varied committees and programs. Under the guidance of Miss Caulkins, the C.O.G. Boys' Federation mixer was a big success. Various activities followed with each girl having an equal opportunity to help their school by serving on one of the following committees: Lounge, Friendly, Service, Social, Art, Program, Scrapbook and Publicity, and Locker. To promote enthusiam the C.O.G. officers helped sell mums for the Thanksgiving Day game. TTiey also decorated the school for special occasions, maintained a first aid room, sold Kleenex, held faculty teas, helped various charitable organizations whenever possible, and the C.O.G. was responsible for placement of the apple machine in the lunchroom. All of these activities and accomplishments represented another successful year for the C.O.G. COUNCIL SUSAN MALSTROM. TROPHY WINNERS | The Weatherwax Forensics Squad moved into high gear in 1960-61, with forty participating members involved in district competition and five college-sponsored invitational tournaments. College tournaments this year included meets at Western Washington College of Education, Seattle Pacific College, Grays Harbor College, Pacific Lutheran University, and the University of Puget Sound. The annual state tournament was held at Washington State University in April. In this, the third year of forensics at Weatherwax, the debate topic was Resolved: The United Nations should be significantly strengthened. Members of sixteen debate teams were required to debate both sides of the question, drawing for rounds immediately before each event. In addition to debate, forensic activities included interscholastic competition in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, interpretive reading, and oratory. Participation in league and tournament competition was determined by individual records established in an active program of intra-squad competition. TROPHY WINNERS-—ROW I: Osheroff, Fitzsimmons. QUILL AND SCROLL Quill and Scroll is an international honorary society for high school journalists, interested primarily in recognizing the work of individual student journalists. Students gain membership in the organization through the local chapters on the basis of outstanding work. Those doing creditable work in poetry, essay, or other forms of creative writing are eligible for membership. Membership in Quill and Scroll is therefore a genuine honor to those who excel in the field of journalism and creative writing. Besides promoting individual endeavor, and supplying practical publication information through a magazine issued four times a year, the international organization provides criticisms of manuscripts and publications, helps in the organization of state press associations, and endeavors to acquaint school officials and the public with the value of high school journalism. CAMERA CLUB The main qualification for membership in the Camera Club is a sincere and active interest in photography. Due to the shortage of facilities, members work individually rather than in groups. Members learn daikroom techniques by developing their own pictures. They are entitled to privileges such as free use of an Argus Super 75 camera, use of chemicals in the dark room, and opportunities to work with other photographic equipment. This year the group made their own Christmas cards, many of which were unique. Some of the members of the club participated in the annual Kodak High School Photo Contest. This contest sets goals for personal achievement and is dedicated to young photographers. The Camera Club’s advisor, Mr. Vincent Hill, is indeed a great help to the members. The Honor Society was fortunate to have the leadership of the able officers, who were Bill Osheroff, President; Dave Presler, Vice President; Barbara Wilson, Secretary; and Karin Strunk, Treasurer. With its advisor, Mr. Charles Bartanen, the Honor Society worked on several school projects during the year. TRAXLER MARILYN GAYDOU Co-Editor Advisor Co-Editor The work and cooperation rendered by this year’s Quinault staff was not only worthwhile but enjoyable. As a result, the staff presents to you the Quinault of 1960-61, a book composed to recapture the scenes that have made this year a memorable one. This year’s staff faced many responsibilities in producing the annual. Some of them were choosing a theme, cover design, and colors, creating dummies and final layouts, and selling advertisements to help finance the book. With deadlines to meet and the task of recording the events of the past year ’Time” became our theme. Production began with the commencement of the school year, and never was more enthusiasm shown by a staff. Many hours of hard work have been expended in the production and final publication of this annual, making it one that we hope will be accepted by all. Many years from now memories of high school days gone by may be recalled as we browse through the pages of this Quinault. Several summer days were spent by the co-editors, Marilyn Gaydou and Steve Carlson, with the advisor, Mr. Traxler, discussing and planning the layout of the yearbook. In the fall these three pre- sented their ideas to the class for a new and better Quinault. A vital factor in the production of this yearbook has been the cooperation and efforts of many persons not on the staff — photographers, our advertisers, the Weatherwax office staff, and many others. The staff wishes to take this opportunity to express its deepest appreciation to all who have helped to make this annual possible. Stories are assigned to the reporters by the department heads and are to be typed and handed in to meet the deadlines. The copy is read by the editors who then prepare the page dummies. All copy is then taken to the printers and the staff begins a three-day wait for the galleys. Last minute details, fillers and captions, are added. Page proofs are then prepared for the staff by the printers; these are proofread and returned to the printers. All that remains at this point is to wait until the finished product is returned to the staff. OCEAN BREEZE OCEAN BREEZE STAFF—Row Is Hughe , Porter, Neva, Erickson, Bates, DiFazio, Modun. O'Conner, previously the Director of Bands at the University of Alaska. Rehearsals started prior to the opening of schools so that the band would be ready for the Puyallup Fair appearance on September 18. The high school band membership consisted of ten seniors, ten juniors, and twelve sophomores. Following the Puyallup trip the band practiced music for use at football games and devoted considerable time to the preparation of a half-time show. Other musical events of the year were the Swing Concert on February 15 and the Spring Concert which was presented on May 10. Early in October a seventeen-piece dance band was formed and has performed on various occasions during the school year. Band executive officers were Bill Osheroff, President, Tom DeCoy, Vice-President, and Paul De-Lorme, Secretary-Treasurer. ORCHESTRA This year the orchestra has been one of Weatherwax's best in several years. The orchestra began preparing before the opening of school for their annual appearance at the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. The annual Christmas Concert was their first appearance at home. The members also displayed their musical abilities at the Swing Concert, in February, and at the Spring Concert, in May. Other activities included the All-Northwest Mus'' Meet on March 3 and 4, the Elks Concert in April, the Southwest Washington Music Meet on April 15, and Baccalaureate on June 4. The orchestra was directed by Mr. J. Gordon Edlund. The officers were: President, Julie Ann McCaw; Vice-President, Alice Fogde; Secretary, Joanne Janzik; Senior Representative, Pam Gauntlett; Junior Representative, Carmen Choui-nard; and Sophomore Representative, Marlene Burr. CHOIR This year the Weatherwax High School Choir consisted of eighty-one voices directed by Mr. Herman Koehler. The group did a splendid job and participated in many different activities throughout the year. Among these were the Christmas Concert on December 22, the Swing Concert on February 15, the Southwest Washington Music Meet in Kelso on March 25, the Southwest Washington Music Meet in Aberdeen on April 15, and the Spring The officers this year were Dick Warberg, President; Wayne Cole, Vice-President; Margaret Hubacka, Secretary; Diane Shafer, Librarian; Judy Jellum, Robe Chairman; Gay Gilpin, Historian; and Bob Pruitt, Student Director and Concert Chairman. The section leaders were Charlene Jensen, Soprano, Janet Smith, Alto, Larry Hansmeier, Tenor, and Tony Hutton, Bass. GIRLS' AND BOYS’ STATES GIRLS STATE—Biclski, Wolff, McCaw, Marshall As the bus rolled to a stop the delegates to Girls’ State caught their first glimpse of Central Washington College of Education which would be their home from June 13 - 20. Girls’ State was founded to further the training of our girls as leaders of tomorrow, to prepare them to take their places in society and make a worthwhile contribution to it. Girls’ State was an opportunity for the girls to live together as self-governing citizens in a democratic society. Participating in Girls’ State gave the girls a better understanding of the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities which they must assume when they reach adulthood. The girls organized governments of states, counties, and cities. They elected officials to run the governments. This represented an opportunity for the girls to prove their ability to participate in government. One of the things Girls’ State provided was a chance to meet girls from all over the state and to make long-lasting friendships. BOYS’ STATE—ROW ONE: Chesterman, Talley, Preszler, Co vail. ROW TWO: Twite hell, LeRoy, Carbon, Yea root. White. Last summer an event was held that ten Aberdeen boys will never forget — Boys’ State. The representatives from Aberdeen to Boys’ State were Steve Carlson, A1 Chesterman, Larry Covall, Bill LeRoy, Steve Nyman, Dave Preszler, Sam Talley, Fred Twitchell, Tom White, and Jeff Yearout. The event was held on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University, in Parkland, Washington. Boys from all over the state took part in this activity to learn more about the workings of our government. During this one-week period, governments of different types were set up by the boys. They elected officers to carry out government actions just as if they were actual office-holders. The boys participated in various activities and programs, such as mock caucuses and legislative sessibns. When Boys’ State was over the boys felt that they had gone through a most satisfying experience that will serve as a guiding influence in future years. GRIDDERS IN ACTION Senior Manager—Jim Hart This year the Bobcats were fortunate in having football coaches of high caliber, ranking among Aberdeen’s finest grid mentors. Mr. Franklin Mach, head coach, introduced to this year’s squad a new style of football — the unbalanced-T formation. The team enjoyed playing this style of football and played with an earnest desire to win. Mr. Mach is a coach with whom everyone has enjoyed working, and we sincerely appreciate his fine leadership of the Bobcats this year. Line coach Dave Swerdfeger’s stern control of the linesmen and his ability to stimulate high interest and morale, while really putting ”his boys” to the grindstone, made him one of the most successful and well-liked coaches in Bobcat history. Although the win-loss record this year was not spectacular, the team was proud to represent Weatherwax and looked eagerly forward to playing each game. However, the Bobcats played one game that made this season one of the best in the football history of our school. This was, of course, the Aberdeen-Ho-quiam Turkey Day contest, in which the Bobcats won a stunning victory. Although the final score was only 8-0, the Cats dominated the game completely, not allowing Hoquiam the satisfaction of gaining a single first-down. This absence of a first-down by the Grizzlies is certainly a record in the annual games played by the two schools. As usual, this year was very successful for the Bobcat B’s, as they won all four of their games. Each year the B’s become tougher and better. As a result of this, they have difficulty finding teams that are real competition. They started the season by downing Ocosta 40-13. Hoquiam was next on their list, as they beat our across-town rivals 14-0. They then proved to be a very tough and determined team by coming from behind in the final minutes to edge Olympia by one point. In their final game they again dropped Hoquiam 26-6. Coach Eklund had much praise for the line, stating that they were a fundamentally sound and hard-hitting group of young men. Coach Urquhart said he was very pleased with the running and ball handling of Wiscomb, Wilson, Burton, Hamilton, and Pacana. These boys carried out most of the backfield chores. All evidence indicates that if this group of players realize their high potential, the next few years will be victorious ones for Weatherwax, continuing the Bobcats' strong tradition. MR. From the first game with Elma, to the last, with R. A. Long, the team will be remembered as having always made its best effort. The Bobcats were led in scoring by Captain John Donaldson. John, who played his last season with the team as a senior, will always be remembered for his hustle on the floor. Mike Bruener, Rich Redifer, Steve Carlson, Bill LeRoy were the other four seniors who completed their last year on our maple floor. Looking forward to next year, a fan may wonder who is left. There will be six returning juniors, all of whom did a tremendous job for Coach Palo this year. Also, the up-and-coming sophomores should not be forgetten. This year's team includes several outstanding prospects as future players. Although the boys are entirely sophomores, they met other teams comprised of sophomores and juniors. Watching these boys in action, we say their desire is to play and win. It isn’t the win-loss record that is most important, but the desire to play and learn that these boys exhibited. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year, fellows. BASEBALL ROW I: LaDow, Brower, Porter, Chorba, O’Brien, Cady, Close. ROW II: Barry, Wilson, Tctzlaff, Hart, Burton, Furth. ROW III: Straughn, Van Volkenburg, Dugas, Henry, Gordon. ROW IV: Kahler, Edison, Gudaz. Entering into Southwest Washington League under the guidance of our new coach, Mr. Frank Mach, the Bobcat baseball team did very well this season. Many new boys turned out, along with many returning letter-men such as pitchers Jim Arnold and Ben Radka, and first baseman Will O’Brien to lead the team. Also returning were lettermen Jim Elway, B. J. Porter, Rich Redifer, Bob Kelly, Keith Folkers, John Gudaz, Walt Wilson and Jerry Brower. The team gave all of their opponents real compe-tion and won a fair share of their approximately fourteen games. Matches were played during March, April and May, depending upon the weather. —110— TRACK TEAM ROW I: Osheroff, Huffman, Danecker, Jacobson, Johnston, Campbell. ROW II: Pasckvale, LcRoy, Faulkner, Miller. The Bobcat track team of 1961 was composed of approximately 40 members, about 25 of whom were on the traveling squad. Coach A1 Bivens arranged for six meets, which were played, weather permitting, before the sub-district meet on May 6. Then followed the Southwest Washington district playoffs on the 13th and the State meet on May 19 and 20th at Pullman. Although the team was not well balanced in all events this year, it was exceptionally strong in several. Among the nine returning lettermen this year were Tony Pasckvale, who last year went to the state meet as a pole vaulter. He performed well, as expected, in this event and in the hurdles. Bill LeRoy and Roger Faulkner excelled in the broad jump, as Jim Jacobson, Terry Campbell and Byron Johnston did in the high jump. Bill Osheroff was back in action for the 180 and 440. Also, Coach Bivens welcomed sophomores Gary Langhans and Russ Kuhns to represent Weatherwax in the sprint and weight events this season. CAT SWIMMERS Weatherwax swimmers were on their way toward the most successful season in the school’s history as our yearbook deadline approached. Coached by Mr. Lawr, the team performed with expert precision and speed in meets with Longview, Mark Morris, Hudsons Bay, Fort Vancouver, and Olympia. The all-time Weatherwax record in the individual medley was broken this year by Denton Fuller, while a four-man relay medley team broke the previous record in that event. Almost every other school swimming record was in danger of being broken at press time. Mr. Lawr was confident that from eight to twelve of his team members would qualify to enter the State Swimming Meet in Seattle. This year’s team includes a number of promising juniors and sophomores who are expected to lead the way toward another outstanding year in 1961-62. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mulroney, Henning, Jorman, Jones, Wiscomb, Stewart, White, Schafer, Marshall, Thorson, Griffith, Duncan, Watson, Dyer, Danecker,- Giuntoli, Miller. CENTER: Sanford, Fuller, White. Record breaking relay: Marshall, White, Giuntoli and Pasckvale. Consistent season winners, Denton Fuller and Tony Pasckvale. —112— Co-Captains Fred Sanford and Tom White Miller and Giuntoli finish backstroke as Mulroney and Henning start. GOLF The golf squad was strong this year, for it included seven returning lettermen and a number of boys turning out for the first time. At the beginning of the season, the boys were placed in position on the team by means of a play-off; a challenge system was used from then on. Matches and practices were held at the Highlands and Country Club golf courses. Team members enjoyed playing their matches. They appreciated the outstanding coaching of Mr. Palo and performed very well in the new league. Giuntoli, White, Jones Boling, Giuntoli, Banks GOLF TEAM—Row I: Schwarz, White, Jones, Banks. Coach Palo explains the famous Palo grip” to veteran Nancy Drosd. —114— Mrs. George Palo, coach of the girls’ tennis team, was pleased to have so many turnouts this year. She hoped to play approximately six games depending upon our good old weather. This year Shannon Gill, Peggy Fields, Nancy Drosd and Beverly Schwartz were the top racquet prospects. The team played some members of the SWW league and some from the old Capital League. The girls were positioned via an elimination ladder, whereby the winners of the pre-game matches were to participate in the matches. The girls worked hard this year but enjoyed every swinging” minute of it. Nancy Drosd returns a serve as Peggy Fields looks on. RACQUET SQUADS ROW ONE: Kalkwarf, Preszler, Fuller, Talley, Miller, DuBrau. ROW TWO: Schwab, Hakala, Mulroney, Henning, LaBounty. This year’s boys’ tennis team was again coached by Mr. A1 Eklund. The team was composed of eleven members, with returning lettermen Dave Preszler and Jim Kalkwarf as their one-two punch. The team represented W.H.S. in fine style in 1961. Coach Eklund arranged for approximately ten matches this season, barring rainouts. Upon completion of these games they entered the Southwest Washington District Playoffs. From there they advanced to the State High School Tennis Tournament, where thirty schools were represented. On the whole, Weath-erwax was blessed with a fine tennis season. Dave and Jim get ready to square in a practice match. Coach Eklund tries to explain the famous Eklund grip” to Terry Jarbo. —115— Dave delivers a smashing serve And Jim makes a successful return. The Rifle Team, coached by Mr. Billy Sullivent, participates in a monthly postal match in competition with almost every high school team in the United States. Judging is done by a unique postal process, wherein the targets for a month’s shooting are sent to an official scorer in Montana. The results are then sent to the National Rifle Association in Washington, D.C., where each high school team is ranked nationally. Weather-wav has a rank of 30th in the nation, an excellent standing, considering the large number of teams in competition. Two of our finest riflemen this year are Don Cole and Don Hindman, who have been awarded Expert ratings by the NRA. On May 13th of this year, five of our riflemen participated in the State Outdoor Championship Shoot along with 200 other Washington sharpshooters GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION RIFLE TEAM RIFLE TEAM—ROW ONE: McLean, Reynolds, Tjernberg, Hancock, Reynolds, Jackson.
