The Quinault Staff of J. M. Weatherwax High School Aberdeen, Washington Presents the (fumault 1000... FOREWORD The Quinault Staff of 1960 worked with one purpose—to capture the activities of a year between two covers. In the mind of every staff member was the thought, A better annual—a better record for my fellow students. His every new idea, his every extra effort was focused on this objective. A school annual is a means to preserve our fun, our worries, and our progressive record of growth while in high school. It is our hope that when you open your annual in future years, recollections of feverish cramming, the anticipation of elections, the significance of commencement, and all the other memories of years behind, will again be recalled. Co-editors, DEDICATED • • • To you, our Mothers and Fathers . . . whose interests have been in the inaproviment of our lives . . . whose love and encouragement have been inspirational . . . and whose never-ending sacrifices have made possible these many years of education . . . we respectfully dedicate the QU1NAULT of 1960. We hope that this tribute you so rightly deserve will prove how highly we regard you. Jntfl (®itr Unrtfi Behind this doorway lies a unique world — a training ground for achievement, creativeness, cooperation, and sportsmanship. This is our world, high school. Our basic purpose is achievement. In studies, sports, and clubs, we strive to master our task. To many an outsider we appear as an indiscernible mass. We dress alike, style our hair the same, and go places in big groups, but we think differently. We are individuals. Among us are the personalities that will emerge as the future doctors, ministers, artists, or pioneers of space. We extend to the reader, whether familiar or not with Weatherwax High, an invitation to step through our doorway and view the activities and progress of the inhabitants of a world dedicated to producing the America of tomorrow. REPRESENTING YOG • • • PRESIDENT: Jim Pritchett All in favor, say 'Aye'.’’ Thus a vote was cast by the Senate under the leadership of President Jim Pritchett. The Senate is composed of the Student Body President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, eight Senators from each class, the class presidents, Boys' Federation President, Council of Girls President, leaders of various school organizations, and Yell King. Assisting with student government was the Board of Control, which included all student body officers. Meetings were held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at which members discussed and took action on school problems. Spirit was certainly popping” at Weatherwax this year. Among the many accomplishments under the student leadership was the completion of the Student Lounge, providing an enjoyable place to spend extra time during lunch periods and after school. The lounge also served as a meeting place for the Senate and Board of Control. The student body is grateful to those who helped to complete the lounge and to the teachers who volunteered their services as supervisors. Other projects in which the Senate and Board of Control took part were the annual World Clothing Drive, the revision of the school constitution, and co-operation with the Hoquiam Board of Control in preventing problems during the Thanksgiving Day game. The Senate and the French Club made plans together for participation in the Foreign Student Exchange program, which is a community project. After a detailed explanation by Mr. Bar-tine, the Student Body budget was studied and approved. Senate members also contributed towards the purchase of Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. Several committees were appointed by the President to aid in improving school conditions. These included the Hall Traffic Committee, which studied hall conditions and suggested possible solutions, and the Beautification Committee, which made great strides in improving and caring for the school grounds. Board of Control members received pins for their services and an opportunity to attend a student government conference in Longview. All student government members concluded the successful and rewarding 1959-60 school year with a picnic. CUSTODIANS Mr. Carlson, Mr. Sutton, Mr. Golby. —n— In dedicating the 1960 QUINAULT to our parents, we mentioned their efforts to help us through twelve years of school. Upon retirement this year, Miss Gladys Shindler will have completed thirty-six years in the Aberdeen school system, engaged in similar efforts. The students who have been helped toward a happier life by this devoted teacher may be number-bered in the thousands. Many of our parents will recall pleasant, fruitful hours spent in her classes. We speak for all of them as well as ourselves when we say, ‘‘Thank you for your help, Miss Shindler.99 We close with Mr. Curran's words, “Her contribution toward the well-being of our community has been outstanding. SENIOR CLASS To the tune of our class song, Graduation Day, we're off to conquer systems, and worlds, and old Wea-therwax is left in the hands of the underclassmen. We of '60 began our high school years as an eager and active class, sponsoring the Sophomore Hop, participating in the March of Dimes Drive, and upholding high scholarship. Officers for that year were Carol Chouinard, President; Alan Jacka, Vice President; and Natalie Yantsin, Secretary-Treasurer. Shortly afterwards we found ourselves promoted to a higher rank. Leading us were Jim Pritchett, President; Jerry Rauhida, Vice President; and Sharon Moore, Secretary-Treasurer. A highlight of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Ball, which had the theme, Island in the Sky.” The decorations were out of this world! By this time it was evident that we abided by our motto, Plan Alan Jacka, President HISTORY Jerry Rauhala, Vice President Janis George, Secretary-Treasurer your work, and work your plan.” The chosen class colors were gold and white; our class flower was the yellow rose. And then came the realization of our dreams and ambitions — Seniors! — and the year when we reigned supreme. Elected as class officers were Alan Jacka, President; Jerry Rauhala, Vice President; and Janis George, Secretary-Treasurer. Projects undertaken in our Senior year included the March of Dimes Drive and the Junior-Senior Ball, which had a Blue Hawaii theme, a romanticist's salute to the fiftieth state. During our years at Weatherwax we have grown in knowledge, abilities, and ambition. Now we, the class of I960, leave to enter the challenging outside world. Our first year of high school has been a never-to-be-forgotten experience—the first of three years packed with run, excitement, and opportunities to learn. Several weeks passed before we felt that we were really a part of the Weather-wax way of life, and next year, with a deeper feeling of belonging, our participation in assemblies, sports, and clubs will increase. Always striving toward high ideals and worthwhile goals — that’s the sophomores. One will always find several members of the class participating in various school activities, trying to uphold the traditions of Weatherwax High School. Throughout the year many girls were active in Pep Club. Many attended the games and worked eagerly toward a successful Pep Week. Satellite Swing”, was the theme for the annual Sophomore Hop, which was a very big success. To start the year right, the class of ‘62 elected hard working Larry Hansmeier as President of the class, Dianne Long as Vice-President, and Sherrie Failor as Secretary-Treasurer. Class Senators were Eric Penttile, Bob Janzik, Bill Gordon, Kirk Jones, Judy Pederson, Bev Ruecker, Jeri Jacka, and Karen Swanson. The very helpful faculty advisors were Mrs. Strong and Mr. Newman. On rainy football nights, the band assisted the Bobcats to victory, pep, and spirit. When basketball season arrived the band was there with its ever-ready pep scngs, which entertained everyone during home games, pep assemblies, and special rallies. The Aberdeen High School opened its busy year, September 20, when they performed at the Puyallup State Fair as the featured musical group for the day. Another of the many activities in which the band took pan was the Southwest Washington Music Meet, held in Longview, on March 21. They exhibited their usual outstanding talent and received a superior rating. When Spring came, plans were made for the Spring Concert, which was presented on May 13. The band officers for this year were: President, Ron Giuntoli; Vice-President, Dave Eaton; Librarian, Ron Brown; Drum Major, Alan Jacka; Uniform Manager, Ed Novak, and Student Director, Bill Hurme. Mr. King did a remarkable job of directing, and the members of the band have appreciated his time and effort. —59— ROW ONE: McCaw, Fogde, Eaton, Lackey. ORCHES Aberdeen’s Weatherwax High School orchestra presented many performances throughout the school year. The year began for the orchestra with a trip to the Puyallup Fair, which took place during the second week in September. The orchestra gave two performances at the Fair — one in the morning and the other in late afternoon. To the students who participated in this activity, the Fair represented one of the highlights of the season. Immediately following the Fair, this group of musicians began working on music for the Christmas concert. In this program, they played three selections: Sleigh Ride,” Christmas Festival,” and for the grand finale, they accompanied the choir with Christmas Tide.” In December, three students were chosen to attend the All-State -Music Conference in Wenatchee. Those selected were Mary Rupert, Julie Ann McCaw, and Alice Fogde. The Swing Concert was presented in February. The Flower Drum Song,” was played and was well received by the audience. On March 24 they gave their annual concert for the Elks Club. The big event of the second semester as the Southwest Washington Music Meet, held in Longview. Before attending the contest the members of the orchestra worked diligently, learning their parts and perfecting their numbers. Presentation of the Spring Concert in May and the Baccalaureate performance in June concluded an active and eventful year for the Weatherwax High School orchestra. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Gordon Edlund, and with the co-operation of the officers: President, Mary Rupert; Vice-President, Nancy Gill, Secretary; Julie Ann McCaw. Junior Representative, Karen Anderson; and Sophomore Representative, Carmen Chouinard the performances given by the orchestra were acknowledged as superlative by many enthusiastic audiences. —61— Director, Mr. Koehler. The lone defeat came in the first game of the season to Hoquiam by the score of 13 to 7. The JV’s later avenged that loss when they won over the Grizzlies 14 to 7 at Hoquiam. Much of the credit for the team's success must go to the defensive and offensive units. The team displayed outstanding ability, both defensively and offensively, with only one score against them in their last four contests; and that was the result of an intercepted pass. The highlight of the entire season was the game at Hoquiam, which was truly a team victory. The team was up for the final game and displayed their best effort of the year. The defensive unit held the Hoquiam Bees to a thirty-two yard total gain. Every player on the squad played in the final three games of the season and gained the necessary experience for the Varsity team.
