J lm k l To a Great Lady, for Tucked away in a corner of the Arts building is a room that resembles a storeroom. However. the energy' of this rooms occupant radiates outward to fill the whole school. The room is the nucleus of many activities in Wayland High School. and its main occupant is a charged atom known as Arlene Leon- hardt. affectionately known as Lady ' by many of her students. Lady ' came to Wayland eight years ago. and in the past eight years she has built a non-existent Drama program into a state award winning one. Work- ing with a small budget and limited stage. she came up with innovations for standard productions that make each one highly' entertaining. An energetic advisor to the Drama Club. Mrs. Leonhardt produces and directs four productions a year. With patience and enthusiasm. she guides a large group of hammyt seniors in the annual production known as the Sen- ior Revuef' This show. while not get- ting raves from drama critics. is always entertaining and draws large audi- ences. Q bv .:.' 135 I-lar Dedication Mrs. Leonhardt's energy and exper- tise are frequently loaned to townwide productions for the Committee for the Advancement of the Performing Arts. Bringing together adults. teenagers, and children for productions that she often writes herself. she does a great service for this organization and the community. Her stamina extends into the summer when she runs a workshop and provides townspeople with an opportunity to participate in a summer musical. Mrs. Leonhardt. respected among her colleagues and peers received many honors for her accomplishments. She was selected as Treasurer of the Massa- chusetts Drama Guild, Those of us who have been associ- ated with her in any way know her as a special person, who takes a sincere interest in each of her students. The class of l978 would like to dedicate our yearbook to Lady in recognition and appreciation of all she has done for the Wayland High School and the commu- nity. f ' , '4 I I P H ll' Q 4 .' y-'9 'F , 5. ,U Q ll, 1 ,,'z 'til ,Sw ' .-'. f x x. Band The miraculous Warrior band pulled off yet another spectacular season of pre- cision marching to thrill the enthusiastic Wayland fans each Saturday. The band was led by the blast of the trumpet section in such songs as Star Wars . Get It On . and other popular tunes. Under the direction of Mr. David Faucher. all the shows were a success. including the high- lighted Thanksgiving show. Following this game, the band turned to concert music and. naturally. entertained large audi- ences with magnificent works such as Light Cavalry . The Winter of 78 post- poned the winter concert for many weeks, but the band managed to put together a fulfilling year of music anyway. best - Eugene 36153- 1 f 1- Rim ly Dana Hillard. Although many of the oldtimers remained. a large part of the Council was peopled hy new forces that showed a great deal of prom- ise. While the experienced kept order and carried on old traditions. new ideas were brought forth and developed. Just as last year. the Spook House proved not only a giant success for the Council. hut also an exciting adventure for numerous youngsters in the commu- nity. The Council was especially active during Winter Week with its innovative ping pong tournament and. of course. its annual lik .4t'uderr1ic. On Thursday night of Winter Week. the coveted accolades for Winter Week plays were awarded. As Spring changed to Summer. a new council came into power. if ffm--f tv . 4. wwf- V- . This years first show was a com- edy-drama called The Czzrlozzs Savage. The story revolves around one Ethel P. Savage tplayed by Janice Okoomianl. an aging exhibitionist who is commit- ted to a mental institution by her step- children lPlayed by Mary Dorfman. Adam Levy' and Ken Woody. The stepehildren are in truth more con- cerned with their late father's substan- .YI 1 'ous smile in the dressing The Curious Savage tial estate than with their stepmother's health. The resourceful Mrs. Savage resents being put out of action, but she is not without a few tricks up her sleeve. She sends her stepchildren on a wild goose chase looking for the money. which. to their extreme embar- rassment. she has kept with her all the time. Eventually Mrs. Savage is found to be quite sane after all. and she in turn has found, ironically, that her friends in the institution Qplayed by Diane Place. Felice Kaden, Bob Curtiss, and John Brunsj seem less like savages than some normal people do. Other leading roles were played by Robin Oprie, Janice Clawson, and Les- lie Smith. All together the cast was well balanced and put forth a praiseworthy effort, as did the crew, under the direc- tion of Steve Kirk. atigkfgl 1 54 aff 1 I 44:1 he 1-4- 5 I halrselung talents 'Hin 1 n V 4 Q 'J' mv, 1-gw-. ,. More Faces With Three Squads This year Wayland decided to split cheerleading into three squads. Foot- ball iiii Soccer. Hockey. and Basketball. to give more girls a chance to partici- pate. This experiment was a success. as almost three times as many girls were able to cheer. The more experienced cheerleaders helped those new to the sport to acquire the skills necessary and this led to three highly skilled squads. Captains Patty Griffin. Buddy Brooks and Scott Kirshe along with four other returning starters. hopes for finally capturing the DCI. crown looked bright. However. major inqiuries to ltcy players robbed the warriors of the title. A young team. including six sophomores. came off a rocky start to finish the season by winning six out of seven league games and three tourna- ment games. Wayland nipped Lincoln-Sudbury 2-l in the second league game. becoming the first DCL team ever to beat them twice. and broke a 3' 2 yearjinx by defeating Weston I-O in the last and most exciting game of the year. The Warriors continued to be a major power in the tournament. demolishing the nineteenth. sixth. and third seeds. Every member played in each tournament game and dedicated the semi-final game to Tom Raskin and Brian Merrell. There were four players. the Tri-captains and Kevin Thomas. named to the All-Star team and Jared Smith was selected for the Boston Globe All- Scholastic team as well. The l977 soccer team's performance was truly excellent and with the outstanding youth program in Wayland. the Dual County Title cannot be far in the future. , V I I, I , .. . 1. I . How can we ever begin to thank you for all you've done for us. the class of l978'? ln addition to being our most steadfast supporter. you have the burdens and responsibilities of teaching Freshmen and Soph- omores. initiating and sustaining the Outing Club. and, ofcourse. you have your lovely wife and daugh- ter. Eliza to care for. How anyone could ever find time to spend with a class of three hundred and help them through their high school years is beyond reck- oning. You were the unanimous choice of our executive board for a new advisor when Mr. Mellor left. and although you were uneasy about accepting our request. you did become the advisor and brought into our class your ingenuity. spirit. drive. energy. and patience. Our treasury was near zero when youjoined us in the fall of 76. but with your guidance. we built it up over our Junior year. Many fund raising events and class activities in two years you were with us couldn't have been pulled off without you. How could anyone ever forget the concession stand and the hot dogs and cocoa. The T-shirts. the ski trips. the dances. the Prom. the candy sales. more T-shirts. Superstars. bell ir2's. executive board meetings. and finally Class Night and Graduation. Sometimes you must wonder if you got more than you bargained for. Now it's through and when we both look back. you will be proud of the job you did and we will reiiiem- ber working with you, What else is there to say except that we appreciate your help and wish you the best of all possible futures. Sincere lhanlts. '69 Your Class. N78 The Challenge of Excellence Hoyy does a person take charge of his or her own life? How does one maintain a goal of full development of his or her tal- ents. abilities and resources? How does a person become all his or her potential will allow? Philosophers and theologians have contemplated these questions for centuries. Today. the educator. the psy- chologist. the student and the working person have joined the philosopher in examining the question of how excellence in endeavor affects our lives. The theme of excellence confronts us all each day of our lives. The theme of the l978 Wayland High School Yearbook is challenge and excellence. l look upon these words as forming one concept- the challenge of excellence. l believe that the challenge of excellence is the most poign- ant and imposing confrontation we make in our lives and that we are presented with this confrontation daily. Socrates. in Plato's Republic focused on this confrontation. He built on the prem- ise that everything has its special purpose e its end. and that when its excel- lence was thwarted. the purpose or end could not be fully achieved. His argument develops along the following lines: The eye has its end and an excel- lence in performing its end The ear has its end and an excellence in performing its end and has not the soul an end which nothing else can fulfill? For example. to superintend. and command and deliberate and the like? ln forming his argument. Socrates pointed out that when an object is deprived of its end or purpose. it is deprived of its excellence. Said in another way. when an object is either defective or unused. then its purpose is unfulfilled. l.Xl:C'l I IVE BOARD: Rim lx David Canavan. loni-.lo Pescosolido. Missy Galbraith. Eric Leith, Dax id Slyc. Mr. Spang ladvisorl. Rim' J: Bonnie Hodges, Cynthia Crowley. Beth Connolly. Carol Rigney. Laura Kiradriicff. Anne Macmillan. Alison Priinaxcra. The words of Socrates in the garden and the words of modern day educators point to the same thoughts. Each of us has the opportunity to fulfill our potential- each of us has the challenge of excellence in our lives. The late James Conant stated it well when he said. each honest calling, each walk of life. has its own elite. its own aris- tocracy based on excellence of perform- ance. Each of us in our daily encounters with self. with others. with goals, with aspirations. with all the activities that make up our lives, has a new opportunity and the continuing challenge of excel- lence. When we allow less than our very best to be our standard for the moment. we let ourselves become less than we are. and the excellence of our being is thwarted. Our interaction with others each day can become rich opportunities for mutual growth and fulfillment. Our efforts to develop the skills and competencies which focus our talent and our creative being can become opportunities to sharpen the excellence of our being. The daily deci- sions around the purposes and goals which we set for our lives can become growth inducing, exciting and challenging to our being. The fulfillment of self is the challenge of excellence, and this great challenge fortunately confronts each of us each day of our lives. The proverb that reads - Today is the first day of the rest of your life. presents the reality of where we now stand in the universe of time. The opportunity for rich- ness lies before us and it is ours to take. l wish good fortune to each of you in the Class of 1978 and may the challenge of excellence be a life's theme for you. A ' A A History of the Class of 1978 With our slogan Open the Gate for '76, we entered the High School as eager and excited freshmen. Under the direction of Mr. Mellor. we were a bit timid and didn't try anything daring or innovative. However we did have a candy sale that made 5140. As Sophomores we gained confi- dence and started to break out of our shell. We held dances, had a light bulb sale Cnot too bright an ideall and scru- tinized the Globe for our names under Globe Santa. Our traditional Soph-Sr luncheon held under-the-pines was a great success and brought us closer together. Sophomore year also was marked by two class excursions: our first Ski-trip to Smugglers Notch. what a trip that was! The windows freezing up. the toilet overflowing on breakfast in Condo 412 and of course the bus running out of gas on the way home! A trip to Crane's Beach at the end of the year was fun even if the sunburns were painful. As Juniors we had to hunt for an advisor and found Mr. Spang among his pigs. He agreed to take on the job 'til graduation. Finding the conven- tional methods of raising money boring tcandy sales. dancesl we ventured into newer areas, T-shirt sales and a Valen- tine's show that brought out a bunch of us hams. The Senior citizens loved it. Striving to break into new horizons we sponsored the Semi-formal that was a minor success but all who attended loved it. And being such an original lib- erated group. we sponsored the first Sadie Hawkins Square dance with caller Rick Good Buddy Moyer. Our prom brought many of us together to plan and execute with minimum diffi- culty, and this traditional event turned out a grand success. Running the concession stand Senior year was very enjoyable for the faithful few. Our specialties were hot dogs. no matter how we cooked them or with what they were served. Our creativity shone again with the first Super Stars Sunday. We won the grueling contest between the classes and an interesting group of teachers. We brought a live band to the High School. the first in years . . . and probably the last. The year was rounded off by the Gong Show which was a smashing hit. 1978 SENIOR SUPEHLATIVES Most Likely To Make A Million Brian Goeselt Verna-Jean Horgan Most Cynical Jim Irving Jackie Blondin Friendliest Jared Smith Toni-Jo Pescosolido Norman Brown Flashiest Jay Rouner Gretchen Bolster Peggy O'Shea Class Rowdy Most Musical Matt Belamarich Bonnie Lamb Class Couple Buddy Brooks Debby Greenberg Class Flirt John Burke Kathleen Sadler Classiest Michael Rosse Verna Jean Horgan Chnl Brad Eckler Debbie Cope Preppiest Jay Rouner Beth Connolly Seniors not pictured: Pamela Bryant Saud Mohammed Dux id Nlclntx rc Steven Ye Bonnie Blake Steven Brady ff W' 5 v , 5 ' Q I- Ss VF' '.i , fi as .- 5.1 Sl dancin' swayin' to the music.
