Since then, he has proved to be not only an integral part in the development of our class, but a good friend as well. We didn't mind it when he wore that gray sweater every day lwith the hole in the shoulderj, or when he insisted on doing pull-ups on the door of the Language office, or when he always greeted us with Okay, who's the wise guy . . . Although Mr. Mellody had many other duties, he was al- ways ready to help our class with its many proiects. He was always present at dances, at meetings, at concession - working with us to benefit our struggling class. We sincerely appreciate the many things he has done for us, and we all thank him for sticking with us and helping so much. Pax tecum, Mr. Mellody. HAROLD E. ABBOTT 50 Campbell Road 1 f1X 0,,.- tx . WHAT'S HAPPENING IN CURRICULUM This year, several changes were made in the curriculum to reach more students with a greater variety of courses. In the MATH Department, two new courses were in- troduced to counter the dissatisfactiontwith small groups. Class in Logic, taught by Mr. Beniamin Levy, and Com- puter Programming, taught by Mr. Peter Rizza and Mr. Douglas Stather, met five times a week for a semester each. Next year this program, designed to provide the students who didn't plan to continue in math with some useful experience, will be expanded to include new, dif- ferent courses. The SCIENCE Department saw three changes for this year. Through the creative efforts of Mr. Bibeau, a Pro- grammed Chemistry, in which students do lab experi- ments and study concepts at their own pace, was made into a full year program. Physics students were taught science with a philosophical and humanities approach in the Harvard Proiect Physics. Mrs. Frances Hatch was the first science laboratory superintendent at Wayland High School. She organized the labs and took care of setting out equipment. In the MODERN LANGUAGES Department, Mr. Allen Engborg taught a small class in German, to supplement the traditional French and Spanish, while the CLASSICAL STUDIES Department continued its classes in Greek, Greco-Roman Philosophy, and Greek Literature in trans- lation, taught by Mr. John Mellody and Mr. Wayne Cruthirds. Students in ENGLISH large group found themselves scheduled into a group with members of all four classes, due to block scheduling. Students organized and pre- sented many of their own large groups. PLAN I is the innovative new program designed for those students who are turned off by the traditional system. Headed by Mrs. Cynthia Atlas and Mr. Joseph Lukis, Plan I has two basic forms. The first, designed for freshmen and sophomores, substitutes a Plan I grade for the established English and History marks. Juniors could take Plan I, plus one elective and the work-study pro- gram. This year, some Plan I students worked as volun- teer teacher aides in Happy Hollow School, helping elementary school students with basic skills. Eventually, every student in Plan I will work as a teacher aide in all four elementary schools. r tl 5: It if it 1 v Z I J S S I it , Mr. Peter Rizza Mr. Joseph Lukas i ' U 1 Q wt. 1 . .wr 4 f .- Mrs. Cynthia Atlas Mrs. Frances Hatch LA N GUAGE MISS JEANNE KIGHTLINGER, French MR. The only outdoor sport in the winter is skiing-and it is one sport that requires dedication as well as love of skiing. Think snow is a common by-word, for that is the sole facility for good competition, whether it be slalom or cross-country. This year, as in past years, the ski team took the DCL title impressively. Practicing through the par- alyzing cold of January and enduring the frustrating thaws of Feb- ruary, the team worked and competed, usually without the big crowds , that other sports draw.
