c70'lBWO'lCl Man is born with certain qualities that make him different from other ani- mals. The foremost quality that makes man the radical animal is his inherent ability to think. The dictionary defines the word think as: The use of iudgment. reason and imagination as opposed to mere sense perception. However, the ability to think is something different from actually thinking. just as there is a difference between a theory and a fact. Although man has the ability to think it doesn't necessarily mean that he can or will use his ability correctly. Neither does a theory become accepted as fact until it is proven correct. Each person has to learn how to think, and usually, he has to be taught. The purpose of a formal education is to help man learn how to think. He is schooled in different subjects that will help him to learn how to think. He studies the thoughts and actions of people, past and present: observes natural phenom- ena. and records his thoughts on them: studies the laws of science: and tries to understand the language of mathematics. His studies are designed to develop his ability. The sum of what each individual learns is determined by the degree of effort he puts into his learning. If he is wise. he continues his formal education as long as he is able to. However, he is not a truly educated man until he has learned how to think. PETER BAKER Administration ..... ......
