Naturally, each succeeding staff wishes to publish an edition which is truly unique. Many are the ideas advanced and debated by the editors, but perhaps only a few can be adopted, because of budgetary limitations. The result is that each editor is spurred on to develop his section with as much originality as possible. The Wahiscan is a book produced in an atmosphere of mystery and secrecy. Its intimate details are guarded as zeal- ously as secrets of state, a procedure which makes the day of revelation anticipated with universal eagerness. This year the staff has undergone a reaction to the in- forrnality of the last two editions, and has decided to portray the events and personages of W. H. S., 1937-1938, in a simple, dignified style. It is their hope that this manner of presentation Will be favorably received by all who read these pages. HIRSCH Superintendent of Schools 19-WAHISCAN-38 Dear Students: Congratulations upon the successful comple- tion of another school year and the publication of one more in the long line of excellent Wahiscans. ln the years to come you will fre- quently turn these pages and memory will carry you back to your high school days. A vivid cross section of high school life is con- tained herein and the memories evoked When you open this book will sometimes be merry and sometimes be tinged with sadness. Today you are eagerly facing the future and each of you hopes to make a fine success in life. Suc- cess does not lie solely in the accumulation of Wealth but in a life of service, characterized by honesty, courage, sincerity and steadfast- ness of purpose. You will all make mistakes but you do not have to respond to encores. Remember, the man who holds down the ladder at the bottom is frequently of just as much serv- ice as the man at the top. Sincerely yours, EVERETT C. HIRSCH Superintendent of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION Mrs. W. A. Paff, President Mr. C. F. Smith, Vice-President Mr. F. A. Boettcher Mr. F. W. Braun Dr. lohn A. Frey Mr. D. M. Kischel Mrs. R. l. Dudley Mr. C. G. Hooker Mr. C. l. Lang Mr. H. Norde Mr. Bert Pagenkopf Mr. P. M. Wilson Dear Students: One of our oldest institutions is the American public school. The history of this institution parallels the growth and development of our national civilization. Enrollment in the modern high school is, indeed, a true cross section of American society. Regardless of race, creed, or color, the American student is entitled to receive secondary education at public expense. The growth of this institution during the past few years indicates the desire on the part of our citizens to give advanced training beyond the elementary school to the youth of the land. This is deemed necessary if democracy is to succeed. To a large extent the future leader- ship of the world rests with this country. There- fore, it is imperative that we provide good leadership in order that the turbidity of world affairs may be alleviated and world peace made possible. This constitutes a real chal- lenge to those young men and women now in our high school. Sincerely yours, G. W. BANNERMAN Principal G. W. BANNERMAN Principal SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL P. T. A. An Annual is the lasting record and pleasant re' minder of high school days. These words are quoted from a venerable source: Volume Cne of the Wausau High School Annual, published in May, 1917. The hope of those pioneers has become a reality, for the Wahiscan is truly a regular institution. Four thousand copies have been sold during the past five years, and this year nearly one thousand pupils will become possessors of Volume Twenty-Two. lncidentally, for the benefit of those statistically inclined, We cite some comparative figures: in 1917, there were one hundred ten seniors: today, three hundred fourteen: the 1917 book had one hundred twenty-four pagesg todays one hundred thirty-six. The 1938 staff just as sincerely hopes that the Wahiscan will continue to be a regular institution, and that in 1960 it will be just as difficult to persuade owners of the 1938 edition to part with their copies as it is today to convince those who possess a 1917 book that they should donate it to the school library or Wahiscan files. No staff could wish for a more eloquent tribute to the product of its labors. ss 19-WAHfSCANl38 Hooker Norton Sawyer Diddams Gritzmacher Schuetz Oppegard Howard Sampson Koschmann 1937-1938 SKYROCKET STAFF Editorial Staff EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ...................... .... The peak of attendance was attained at the Rhinelander game when the Central School auditorium was filled to capacity. After a lapse of several years, baseball again has become a major sport in our high school. Coach Bandlow issued a call for candidates during spring vacation, and approximately 80 boys turned out. Wausau High School's most ardent supporters would scarcely have predicted as successful a season for her athletes as she has already enjoyed. More specifically speaking, her football season was attempted with a nucleus of nine lettermen from the previous season. Untried material was thrown into the breaches to start the season, green men, but capable and promising, green men who stood the test from the start and started to win games and continued to Win the games until the close of the season, which found one defeat out of seven starts checked against them. Antigo had a fine team and We played to win. The sting of defeat still smarts. We lost, but then there Will be another year. The lf-B38 football season should bring out some outstanding athletes. We will have some lO lettermen back, and the nucleus of a fine football team. The team will be light, but will have the experience that it missed this year. The boys deserve a World of credit for their fine spirit and willingness to make this 1937 team one of the best. Their efforts have been satisfied by Winning the Conference Championship. W.
