The fast times atWauneta High School are not all classroom hours. Many of the fun times are spent in the hallways and the parking lot. You can often find the seniors chatting with their friends in front of their decorative lockers that are sometimes found stacked. The juniors may be found in the student lounge napping or exchanging last night's homework. You will notice that many of the sophomores are found in the school parking lot checking out everyone's vehicles and waiting to become of legal age to drive themselves. Then there are the freshman, they are everywhere and more talkative than ever. Many of the students say that they will never forget the wonderful times in the hallways and classrooms of WHS. The wonderful evening began with a buffet banquet decorated with various exotic fruits, deserts, and a meal consisting of ham. baked potatoes, and a roll Dinner was followed by a refreshing desert of sherbet ice cream. Drinks were served by prom servers dressed in grass skirts. The servers were Joe Thompson, Janal Applegarth. Shaun O'neill. Lisa Buffington. Shelly McCallum. and Ryan Haarberg They put on a delightful skit concerning teenagers on a date at the show theater. The senior class will and prophecy was read by Linn Hendrix and Leslie Houser. The junior class president. Lisa Wilson, and the senior class president, Lori Buffington, remarked on the prom and congratulated the juniors on a fine job. After some serious picture taking by Hubbard's Photography, the crowning was held. Second attendents were Chad Nordhausen and Linn Hendrix. First attendants were Joel Gockley and Leslie Houser. Doug Terry was crowned as king, while Lori Buffington was crowned as queen. The royalty danced to the theme song. Endless Summer Nights By Richard Marx. The atmosphere was filled with romance as couples danced across the floor. An enchanting fountain beside a paper hut and accented palm trees, gave the prom elegant beauty. These little angels consisted of Jay Baltzell. Jay Bartles. Mark Bishop. Lori Buffington. Lori Cameron. Dave Collins. Tammy Collins, Christie Cox. Teresa DeWester, Wendy Fanning. George Fekkers. Mike Gage, Joel Gockley. Phil Hartzer. Joe Huskey. Brenda Lacy. Kim Lee. Nikki McBride. Jolynn McCallum, Libbi Malone. Amy Miller. Chad Nordhausen. Antonia Rafaelli. Kris Stienke. Ed Stretch. Doug Terry, and Tanya Weiss. Mrs. Prior decided to keep them all entertained, that she woudl would have them hatch chickens by an incubater. That did not keep them entertained for long, but it was fun. 1977. What a year. No more simple kindergarten, and to top things off. we had Mrs. Cfeger, a first grader's nightmare. Antonia Raffaelli and Dave Collins decided to leave us. but to take their place were Leslie Miller and Shelia Brown What a disappointment, all those fun numbers we learned last year, and this year they are actually making us use them. 1978. What a heartbreaking year! Our class was put into two separate rooms, because of it's size. It was quite an accomplishment to say we had the biggest class size though, and at least we got to see everyone at recess. The lucky students who rated Mrs. Fortkamp's room got the “nibble bucket on Fridays, and their first taste of art. The other children were shipped off to Mrs. Miller's classroom. The girls went crazy over two new arrivals-Joel Brott and Bruce Odle. The boys didn't complain, for they got that foxy Leslie Houser and Staci Wood. Shelia Brown left us, and after a short visit, so did Dana Carlson and Alan Duckett. 1979 Mrs. Applegarth got our votes for favorite teacher. She took us on a bike hike, which we thought was super that someone finally trusted us off of the school grounds We also made it “the thing to go together. Bruce Odle made sure he got first shot at Kristi Wickizer, our newcomer Derek Watson thought he might try our class out. so we gave him a big welcome, even when he decided to change his name to Andrews. 1980. Well, we just kept moving up the exciting ladder of the Wauneta School. We were thrilled . rah Mrs Petsch tried to keep us in hand, but that was hard for we were at that reble stage. Jay Bartles decided he liked the class of 1989 so much that he would join them. We also lost J.D. Baltzell and Bruce Odle. Kim Lambert. Michelle Weiser, Mario Archer, and Chuckie Robi-doux joined our class. We could not wait until 6th grade. Wauneta Municipal Utilities 70 1981 Mrs. Nelson helped us get through that awkward stage that seemed to plague us through our 5th grade year. We learned all kinds of new things, mostly that the older you got. the more homework teachers seemed to like to give you We were a tough class though and thought we could handle anything, that was until Sidney Walford joined us. He was the toughest kid on the block, at least in his own mind (which we wondered if he had at times). The thought of finishing school with Sidney was enough to scare Michelle. Chuckie. and Kim Chee away to other schools. Linn Hindrix decided Sidney was a real cutie. and decided to join us. 1982. This was a very big year for us. because we got to change classrooms at different hours. Wow I We thought this was putting us up there with the high schoolers (little did we know). In sixth grade the class clowns started to show prospect. Joel. Chad. Doug, and Mike began to irritate the teachers and put a grin on everyone's hardworking face. Karl Wickizer was the new addition to our class, and seemed to have a crush on all the girls. Joel Brott: Nikki leave poor Coon (Eddie) alone! 1983. JR. HIGH!!! Well, we were finally official studs! Almost everyone in our class went out for one of three sports, and became officially interested in the opposite sex. Love notes were passed and hearts were broken, but we all remained buds. Karl W and Joel B. decided that they couldn't handle our newcomer. Tracy Osborn, and departed. Our good pal Kris went to McCook, but Joe Huskey joined the fun. 1984. It seemed impossible that last year we just started Jr. High and this year we were picking out our colors for graduation. Derek and Teresa's athletic abilities started to shine through, and Joel showed that he knew how to run the class and give orders as president. Christie Cox thought it would be more fun in the wild town of Stratton than in Wauneta, so she left us. Our graduation theme was Tomorrow. and class colors lavender and gray. On the last day of Jr. High, some of the chosen were egged, soaked, or practicly walked to death. It was a fun year. 1985. Finally Freshmen!! We were at the bottom rung of the high school ladder, but our egos had never been better! A week before school had started our faces had been covered with lipstick, and we were all worried about a severe case of acne our first week as frosh. freshman's worst nightmare, (we had forgotten all about the evil Mrs. Creger). Tracy kept Mr Goodchuck's class alive with her little temper tantrums, and all the girls drooled over our new classmate. Trey. Tammy couldn't bear thought of another moment in a room with the gorgeous guy. so she moved. Chad: Are we having fun yet, if so let me in on it please. Teresa: Take the dang picture, or get out of my face! Adams Drug. Imperial Derek and Phillip show off their stylish new FFA jackets. 71 1986. As sophomores we not only got to pick out our class rings, but we no longer had to take the dreaded P.E. class, or Drivers Ed. We learned from Mr. Benner in English how to make alimony payments and to never call him Todd. Staci. Tracy, and Joe left us. and somehow our class seemed to grow closer. In the spring some of us were chosen to dress up like mice, and serve the mighty Juniors and Seniors at prom. Are we ever going to be Seniors? could often be heard. 1987. As the Junior class president. Jo definitely had her hands full Soup and Pie suppers were always dreaded and meetings on the Prom were a battle zone. We decided on the colors red and black, and the theme of Masquerade. along with the song. Will you Still Love Me? The music was great and so was the party, courtesy of Mike Gage. 1988. The year we had all been waiting for had finally arrived. Can you believe we are actually Seniors? was heard constantly Trey was no longer with us. but Kris Steinke joined us again last year to make up for the loss. JoLynn's engagement. Joel and Lori B's romance, and Doug's obsession with a girl by the name of Bonnie were the- talk of the class. Our class colors were Royal Blue and Silver, and our class relationship had never been better. We had been through bike-rides, red hots, hot-dates, plenty of parties, and a lot of complaints about homework. We had quite the memories, but then again we were quite a class. Lori and George looking smashing for the Junior Prom. Mark: Do I really have to do this??? The Wild Welder of the West. (Mike) Leslie Okay, campers let's blow this joint. As I sat down one Sunday afternoon to watch T V. before I was to leave on my trip. I couldn't believe who was on T.V.. none other than George Fekkers. He was managing the Baltimore Orioles. He was the youngest manager in pro-baseball history, and wait just one minute, who is that arguing with George Why it's Nikki McBride, the first woman umpire. I could tell George still thinks he knows everything and Nikki still argues about everything. It seems the argument was over the entertainment for the seventh-inning stretch. George could see nothing wrong with the all wheelchair marching band directed by none other than Mr. Andrews A K A. wheels. I decided to make a stop in Baltimore so I could see George and Nikki, to find out the where abouts of other class mates. As I boarded the airplane I couldn't believe who was the flight attendant telling jokes to the passengers. None other then Brenda Lacy. I asked her why she was into joke telling, she told me that on this very same plane and in the cock pit was Mark Bishop and Eddie Stretch, and they still drive like they did in high school, so she wanted to get the passengers minds off flying. ■ Well, then I flew to Baltimore and Mark. Brenda, Ed. and I all decided to go have a few drinks. So we went to a local bar, called The Penitentiary and met George and Nikki there. We were all talking about the glorious days in high school and I was busy asking the rest of the group if anybody knew where their high school friends were As soon as I asked the question a voice from behind the bar said sure I do and as we all turned around there stood Joel Gockley. He is the owner and bartender. As most bartenders, he knew everything. He was able to tell us that Chad Nordhausen and Jo Lynn McCallum went to Alaska to start a new circuit on the Pro-Rodeo tour, they called it the Ice-Age Rodeo tour Brenda said that Amy Miller was in France modeling clothes, but would like to go somewhere else because some of the girls she worked with had hairier legs then some of the men she worked with. Nikki told me that Kim Lambert was in England drawing pictures for the Queen and the royal family, and happened to see Mr. Goodchuck sipping tea with the Queen George told me that Doug Terry and Lori Buffington (our former Vice President and President) had two years left in the Switzerland National Prison for embezzeling the senior class funds It seemed like a stiff penalty for $3.29. Warden Wentz has been brought in as special advisor to prevent escapes. Ed said I should stop over in Moscow to see the latest ballet ‘performance by the Twin-Tower Troupe' of Derek Andrews and Teresa DeWester. Mark said that Mike Gage is now serving two consecutive life terms in prison for poaching at the McCook Elk's Club. He also said that Lori Cameron finally discovered her inner talent and is now completing a tour with Bruce Springsteen, and Def Leppard I then told everyone that Leslie was a traveling veterinarian in Europe and was currently in Scotland tending to the Lach Ness monster's sore throat Now I was still missing Phillip and Kris.
