. •■•I' l MNV5I .I I.V.I.S I.S II I WAUNETA BRONCO 1985 Wauneta Nebraska Success is not a result of talent, fame, riches or glory as much as it is a result of good relationships with people. People are the basis of friend-ships-friendships are the basis of success. In Memory of Kris Krausnick Oh when I was ready to leave you were standin’ beside me Sayin’ all your goodbyes Then I saw a tear step down from your eye and what I said to you put a smile on your face. I said: Friends never really say goodbye a tear never really comes from their eye, ’cuz they know they’ll see you again, I shook your hand and I said a fake goodbye I said long ones always make me cry But you’ll always be in my heart and my mind ’cuz they know they’ll see you again. Shari Jerod Jack’s Place Jeffass F ed Seed Class History Of 1985 In 1972, fourteen cute little kids — tall, short, fat, and skinny, even pigeon-toed and freckle-faced, ran into the Kindergarten room anxiously telling Mrs. Prior our names so she could spend the next several weeks teaching us how to spell them. We were Sid Bartels. Matt Buffington, Missi Buffington, Lonnie Lewis, Troy Littrel. Elizabeth Nordhausen, Heath Norhhausen, Johnny O’Neil. Joel Steinert. Rhonda Steinke, Dick Travis, and Shari Wilson. These were the days when we could color on the walls and get by with it becasue we’d just say, Teacher, Johnny did it! And she'd believe us! But these was always that dreaded five minutes of work she would make us do. She would say. OK boys and girls, it is time to do our work for today ... get out the shoes and practice tying them. In the First grade we met up with Mrs. Creger, better known to us as The Wicked Witch of the West;” but one good thing about moving up was that we had graduated from a dreadful year of nap taking. In this year Elizabeth and Johnny left us, and Troy decided he liked Kindergarten so well he’d just stay. But James Armstrong stepped in and gladly filled the vacancy. In August of 1974, we were all a little scared to make our way across the hall to Mrs. Fortkamp’s. We heard from the third graders that if you did something wrong she would bop your chin. But on Friday’s she would mellow out and try to make it up to us by having the Nibble Bucket. That’s probably why Flossie Barrett. Mike Bishop. Gina Crider, and Jerod Stovern joined our class. As Fourth graders we were delighted in gaining Shelly Miller and Darrin Wood, and we got the pleasure of riding the bus to Hamlet. Boy. did we have fun until Ray and Marilyn assigned us seats. We were treated pretty special in Hamlet. Our janitor, Floyd Greeley, always had a joke to tell, we always got plenty of sympathy from our nurse Lena Maris, and the cooks made us some fantastic cinnamon rolls. We got the honor of digging our own dug-out, which made us feel like the Pawnee Indians, and we also became carpenters when Mrs. Petsch let us build our own play fort. Thank goodness we talked her into building it near the back of the room, the further from her desk the better. And believe us. we just lived for music class when we got to see Miss Orr and sing about how much we like Cheese. Peas, and Chocolate Pudding! We returned to Wauneta and encountered Mr. Batterman as Fifth graders. This year we gained Jeannine Myers who upped our class number to 17. To this day we all remember the first day of school when Mr. B. gave us a test to see how well we could follow directions; we all flunked. And on the sporty side of life, the girls always gave the boys a mean game of flag football. In the fall of 78 we gained Rodney Maret and Richard Andrews, but Jeannine left and Kris took the year off to attend school in Conneticut. This year we thought we were pretty hot stuff. We got to switch classes just like the Junior High kids, and we could talk the subs into letting us watch Happy Days. But those ear pulls of Mrs. Hromas not only stretched our ears and hurt our ego, it knocked us down a few notches. As we entered Junior High we lost Shelly and Rodney, but we gained Flossie Barrett. Kim Steiner, the great Rocky Weber, and Kris rejoined our class. We were always certain to get a bargain with Rocky; his pens with no springs were quite the items, not to mention his A HEALTHY HOG IS A HAPPY HOG stickers. The one and only Miss Swanson was in the lime light this year also. And to this day the only word the boys can remember from our Spanish class is ... besame. Yes. we were finally the hot shots of Junior High and boy did we have fun. To bad Kim and Flossie had to leave us. This was the year the chicken pox epidemic hit. Some of us stayed out a whole week, breaking out with bumps, while others of us stayed home for some slight acne problem. During the end of the year we were all looking forward to our class trip to the city of McCook. Can you guess who occupied the back two seats on the way home? Yes. them ... and their sweeties. Then it was graduation time. Time to argue with our parents about them not letting us have a dance, time to throw temper tantrums because we had to walk on our scavenger hunt, and time to cry to Mr. Goodchuck because he wouldn’t let us walk down the center aisle at our graduation. Even though we may not have acted like it. we were ready to be promoted into High School, and we couldn’t wait. Freshman now! At last we had made it into High School. Little did we know that these next four years would go by so quickly. There would be a lot of activities and accomplishments for all of us. We were pleased to gain Jim Heskett and twins Rhonda and Ron Litle. Moving away were Rocky Weber and Rhonda Steinke. It seemed, too, a year of tragedy as Kris Krausnick was killed in an airplane accident, and Rhonda Litle departed this life suddenly. This seemed to draw us closer together as a class. We realized each classmate was a special friend. A part of us will always remember the good times we shared with Kris and Rhonda. Each year offers something to anticipate. Here we are Sophomores and this year we ordered our class rings. When they arrived, we were pleased with our selection. In fact. Brian likes his so much he won’t wear it. but he won’t give it to Shelly either. We had matured a lot since Freshmen. We grew up a lot over the summer. We were intelligent and smart, yet foolish enough to get involved in a game of mud volleyball during Homecoming week. What a sight! At the end of the semester we found ourselves adjusting to a change in the English room. Mr. Florea moved and a little smiley man moved in known as Mr. Benner. Making our way up the ladder, we had reached our Junior year. During the Christmas season our class won mega-pennies for having the best decorated door, and a couple months later our Bronco boys won the District title; the first in nineteen years. Michelle had a talent for looking up the computers. Her best performance was erasing Joel’s more lengthy program, the one he had worked diligently on for a week. Then Prom night arrived. All those pre-prom headaches, all the details of planning, and the long hours of decorating seemed to be forgotten as we enjoyed the results of our efforts. This year Wayne Hackney joined us at the beginning of the year and Mike Bishop dropped out. 1985 — and there are fifteen of us. Heath had decided not to finish his last year. Eight of us had been faithful from Kindergarten until thirteen years later. We had really made it. and we had done well individually, as a class, as teams, in music, academics, and in athletics. We can reminise about the last 13 years and laugh a lot. Then there are some things we'll never be involved with again. Like taking those Senior pictures, hearing Raw Sewage. playing at the State Volleyball Tournament, playing Secret Santa, hearing that the Board of Education vetoed a new gym floor only to pass the purchasing of a walk-in freezer, and awaiting Mr. Benner’s decision to take taxis to the Wheatland game. We've shared all the laughs and sorrow, all the achievements and disappointments, and we will never pass this way again. Pennington Photos 76 WILL OF ’85 We the Class of ’85 of Wauneta High School. Mr. Broadbent. alias “Handsome Hulkster.” school principal during the reign of the class of '85 was aetting ready to test out his prize! It was a time machine he had won for telling the 10 worst jokes of the 20th century at the National “Give the Fat Guy a Chance Comedian Finals! With his Fidel Castro cigar in hand he turned the dial 20 years ahead to 2005! He felt the machine shake and sputter and then he was off to check on the class of 1985! This is what he found (Oh, boy): Dick was busy as the head construction engineer developing the project to build a thriving town on the moon. Joel was playing for the Boston Celtics where he replaced the “Bird Man” averaging 35 points. 12 rebounds, and 14 assists per game. Brian was progressing as a top GM executive! Through his efforts. GM had the fastest sports cars on the market. Brians’s Motto: “If you can’t out run ’em, why own it! Lonnie was busy at LBM (Lonnie Business Machines) designing the new GUEY JR., a computer the size of your hand, with a 28 K memory. Jerod, a professor at MIT. was busy baffling students with his thoeries on the origin of chalk. Richard was busy out in California doing body work on the Stare ... cars that is! He hadn’t changed, he was still chasing women. Wayne had contracted the construction and cement work for the new interstate across the middle of the U.S. Wayne estimated they could be finished in 2 months. Sid, the small town Steak Out chef, had just opened his own Restaurante in south San Fran! It was Sidmont’s Bar Grill. Matt was working diligently at his job as conductor of the Boston symphony; he was the best hunchbacked conducter you ever saw. Ron was busy out in “Big Sky Country” Montana as a bearded carry-out boy still trying to keep his TOMATO cruiser in repair. Jimmy was busy repairing cars (mostly his cars) at his body shop in Pebble Beach California. His motto: “If you can wreck ’em. we can fix ’em.” Missi was busy modeling clothes for Tide commercials. She said that even though the work was “kinda dirty.” the pay was good and she got to keep the clothes TIDE didn't work on. Michelle was enjoying her job as an elementary professor for kids with “above average” IQ’s! She found each day a challenge teaching kids things she’d never known of! Shari was the head physical therapist for the Miami Dolphines! The job was exciting and laying in the sun with those big bruisers was worth it! Brad was having the Grand Opening of his new business “Stereo Villa” in New Jersey! Brad had revolutionized the concept of built in headphones that could be fixed permanently to your head.
