THE PRESENT K-12 SCHOOL BOARD From left to right: President - Irving Skelton; Secretary - Duane Burham; Clyde Hoff; Victor Haarberg; Treasurer - Ervin Kitt; E. N. Berry SCHOOL DONS NEW PROFILE We, the class of 1967, have chosen Nebraska’s centennial as a theme for our annual. When we consider the fact that in twelve short years our class has experienced two major consolidations in our school system, we wonder what will happen in the next twelve yean. In 1955, when we started in the first grade, a number of schools had just united to enlarge Wauneta Grade School District No. 31. This enlargement brought about many changes, including a bus system and a hot lunch program. It was the dream of some people in the community to provide for better educational opportunities for morestudents. Plans for this dream began when we were in the third grade. This necessitated many, many hours of work for thosepeople involved. They had to decide what districts to take in, to contract said districts, and to have meetings with district members. The interested advocates worked for ten diligent years to form this K-12 system. It must be remembered that through the trials and tribulations they never lost sight of their goal. To us K-12 has meant that the high school and grade school boundaries have been combined to form one large district, which we might add is now the largest K-12 district in Southwest Nebraska. The many advantages brought about by the K-12 system for us are enumerated as follows: (1) Use of teachers to better advantages (2) Teaching of more subjects and more specific fields (3) More pupils in class, which stimulates greater competition (4) More pupils and materials to work with (5) Better teachers with higher salaries for them (6) Buses and hot lunch programs. So through the dreams of many interested people, especially those of the Board of the Elementary School which preceded the organization, have come the better educational opportunities for students. Just think, the class of 1917, with two students, was the first to graduate, while we, the class of 1967, are the first to graduate under the K-12 system.

Wauneta’s school system is very ably headed by new superintendent Bill Matthews. His sincere interest in the students and his excellent executive ability are evident to everyone. Mr. Matthews was formerly high school principal at Morton, Texas. He holds B.A. AND M.A. degrees from Adams State College, Colorado and is doing graduate work at the University of Arizona and Texas Tech. SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE OUR SUPERINTENDENT Mrs. Matthews, Mark, Stephen, Jennifer It is my sincere wish that this school year has been a most satisfying one for you. Many of the things which we set out to do have become accomplished facts. 1 feel that we have gone forward in the right direction, and I give credit for this to the splendid cooperation given the administration by the student body, faculty, the board of education, and the citizenship of Wauneta in general. I wish for the outgoing students the very best, and hope that those of us who are left behind can continue to work for a better Wauneta High, and that we may make as much progress next term as we have this, toward that goal. OUR PRINCIPAL Robert Tapp is the capable principal of the Wauneta School. Always busy, always interested—Mr. Tapp keeps our school operating smoothly and efficiently—yet he always has time to extend a friendly hand to students and visitors alike. Mr. Tapp holds a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Chadron State College, and is doing graduate work there.
