Class Prophecy The date is May 11, 1969. The scene is the lobby of a large hotel in New York City. In one of the big easy chairs is a man reading a newspaper. As I look over his shoulder I see that the paper is The New York Daily Blab, the newspaper with all of the nation's news, and that its editor is Joyce Creasman. Joyce was in the Class of ’59 that graduated from the Wauneta High School ten years ago. Her job as editor here is really a change from editing that small school paper we used to put out. According to The Blab, Larry Olmsted is making his third trip to the moon as part of the last stages of the government experiments concerning space travel. Next month anyone can make the trip, the article says. Headlines of a big criminal case being tried in court at the present time catch my eye. I glance through the story and notice that the prominent lawyer, Tom Sutherland, is defending the alledged criminal, Chorley Sturk-feather. Tom's private secretary, who has been a great help in the case, is Vesta Smith. Richard Nordhausen is the judge at this court session. An outstanding chemical engineer, who was just recently added to the Dupont Company staff, has just discovered an absolute cure for the common cold. The name of this person sounds familiar. It's Sandra Morgan. Big political campaigns for some coming elections are already in progress at this time. I see that Phil Wilson, a noted political leader, is starting on a nation-wide campaign tour next week. Well, there's the name of another '59 graduate in the news. Barbara Bartels is to be the chief model in the Paris fashion shows at the great Style Center throughout the remainder of this month. There is an article here about the bankers' convention which was held in San Francisco last week. John Green was elected chairman of the convention for the next three years. He is getting to be quite important, it seems. Another S W oil station was opened in the eastern states last week. It is the fifth one to be located east of the Mississippi River. The company with over two hundred separate stations is owned by Kenneth Wade. I can remember when there was just one little station on the comer in Wauneta. The Municipal Art Gallery is showing some exquisite masterpieces this afternoon. There will even be a few creations done by that famed artis, Verdonna Colby. Dr. Gloria Brunt has just been given a place on the City Hospital staff. Also on the staff, as assistant head of nurses, is Karen Moon. A very alert forest ranger in the Rocky Mountain National Park was able to prevent a wide-spread forest fire last night. There is an interesting story about this and while reading it I find that the ranger is none other than Eugene Carrigan. Home Economist Kay Hoff, who is now associated with the General Electric Company, will soon begin her state-wide demonstrations of several new types of household electrical equipment. Robert Hays, the famous animal heart specialist is now assistant head of the Thayer Animal Clinic. This is quite a high position for veterinarians. The Air Force has just received for their use several of the newest type of airplanes. Pilot Rodger Crow will have command of one of these huge air vessels. There is an article here about the noted K bar L Ranch in western Wyoming. It is about the largest cattle ranch in the country and is owned by Fred Krausnick and Jim Lewis. Lynn Haarberg, whose very successful farming career has received such favorable comment the past few years, is now beginning his work as Secretary of Agriculture. hi Wally's About The Town column I see that rich playboy Gary Polly has been seen several times with actress Melodie Marlowe. I wonder if it is anything serious this time. In the society pages I find an interesting account of a buffet supper given in the home of the former Vivian Breese. Among her honored guests was the former Dorothy Foster. They are both happily married now. Also on the society pages is a note telling about the trip to Europe recently completed by Robert Cox and his wife. Bob, as he is known to his friends, is making millions now as owner and manager of a large custom cutting outfit in the central states. hi the theater section is an advertisement of a great new cinemascope movie starring Race Stevens. It is in technicolor with supersonic sound and everything. Upon closer examination I realize that the actor pictured is Joe Fanning. He's a second Clark Gable! The Metropolitan Opera is starring for this season the well known opera singer, Sharrona Errillo. She's known to her friends as a member of the class of '59 named Sharron Merrill. The last pages in the paper are the advertisements. Here I see the name of Kenneth Brunkhorst who is now a famed mortician. I see that Kenny finally achieved his secret ambition. The man reading the paper gets up and walks away and I am left surrounded only by memories of the class of '59. 11
