The first string backfield: Rider, Denker, Sandman, Johnston. F if 4 ATHLETICS The season of 1948-1949 was a builder's year at Wauneta High School. Graduation in 1948 cost the football squad much of its former scoring punch and only two lettermen reported for basketball drills. Coach Robert Wachs, handling the Wauneta squad for the first year, found it necessary to work on funda- mentals with the light and inexperienced boys in both squads. Track was slowly being rebuilt from wartime neglect. Only the golf team was turning in fine performances. FOOTBALL Football was particularly difficult because of the calibre of the opposition. Wauneta became a mem- ber of the South Platte Valley Conference, and found rugged opponents in every game. Seven Nebraska teams played were listed at one time or another in Gregg McBride's Top Ten in Class C During the season. Bob Newman and Richard Sandman were Co- captains of the football team. Dennis Einspahr was named once on the OMAHA WORLD HERALDS Star of the Week roster, and was named on the Frenchman Valley Honorary All-Conference team. FIRST ROW: Newman, Sexson, Dennis Einspahr, Jussel, Harvey, Widger, Sand- man, Dale Einspahr, Miller, Maddux, Coach Wachs, SECOND ROW: McCallum, Rowley, Nichols, Gage, Denker, Beezley, Johnston, Redfield, Troxell, Walgren, Large, Rider, B.
