mourns iDeafA of iss xgrene exfon Miss Irene Sexion Born: June I4, l895 Died: March 22, l9'57 WTHS-I 922- I 957 AUKEGAN Township High School faculty and students were saddened by the death of Miss Irene Sexton, who passed away in Victory Memorial Hospital on the morning of March 22, 1957. For thirty-five years, she had been an outstanding member of the high school faculty. Miss Sexton was born june 14, 1895 in Neshkoro, Wisconsin. While still young, she moved to Oshkosh where she attended high school. After graduation, she entered Oshkosh State College, and later the Uni- versity of Wisconsin. Miss Sexton taught commercial arithmetic at Har- bor, Indiana for two years and for one year at Dwight, Illinois. She came to Waukegan in 1922 and started out teaching bookkeeping in a small room which is now a part of room 34, the vocal music room. Book- keeping was at that time a popular subject among boys at high school. There are many men in Wauke- gan today who received their first lesson in bookkeep- ing from Miss Sexton. In 1930 she received her Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin. Later she did graduate work at Northwestern University. When the commercial department was moved to the north building, Miss Sexton transferred to the typing de- partment. Her hobby was taking freighter cruises during the summer to out-of-the-way places. She especially en- joyed the Orient and its people. Miss Sexton's favorite city was Hong Kong, which she visited several times. 'lust last summer she spent two weeks there, and trav- eled through Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines. She loved going into little shops, through the streets, and into homes in the sections of the cities that were not ordinarily frequented by tourists. Miss Sexton knew at first hand how the people lived and what they were like. She had the unique ability to make people understand her, even though she could not speak their language. Miss Sexton will be remembered as a capable and efficient teacher. She worked quickly and was usually one of the first to turn in reports, records, and the like. She had a habit of arriving at school an hour or more before the pupils in the morning, and one could always find her busy in her room at that time. Pupils sometimes felt her requirements for perfection were too difficult to attain, but once mastered, they appreciated her assignments. A keen sense of humor, a love of young people, and a strong feeling of responsibility toward her job characterized Miss Sexton as a person.
