Ill-YI DAY CELEBRATION IS' HUGE SUCCESS It was apparent to 600 loyal Wl-lS'ers that Ki-Yi Day was to be an unforgettable day even as we busily constructed floats and pointed the street in front of the school on the eve of homecom- ing, Tension mounted hourly on that September day, reaching a triumphant climax as Judy Kay I-laggar and Doug England, i956 Ki-Yi Princess and Chieftain, were presented to the student body at the traditional Legend ceremony. Following the Legend, the annual Ki-Yi parade, which consisted of floats and bands from junior and senior high, wended its way through downtown streets, cheered by crowds of townspeople and harassed by high winds, Winning their first homecoming game in four years, the Arrows decisively boiled the Bobcats, 34-O. ARROWS WIN SHARE OF ESD GRID GROWN An l8 year famine in the ESD conference came to a smashing end this year for the Watertown Arrows as they tied with Yankton and Aberdeen for the grid crown. This was the first time they had won the conference since records were kept, beginning in 1938. The Arrows swept to five victories and suffered only one defeat in conference play, They allowed only one touchdown to an ESD school, ironically the one that beat them. This loss was to Aberdeen. Watertown amassed l92 points this season, pointing out offensive power, and yet at the same time, the defense held Wl-lS's opponents to 40 points. Offensively, Jim Vogt led the Arrow scoring parade with 48 points. Lee Rhodes and Morrie Trandal fol- lowed with 36 each. Defensively, Wayne Ellis paved the way with 67 tackles. Mike Ellwein, the quarterback, was top passer with l4 completions, Co-captain and All-State player, Rich Kosier, was the top kicker. It was a real success story for Coaches John DeWitt and Dudley Melichar, who this season made debuts in the ESD, DeWitt as head coach, and Melichar as backfield coach. DeWitt lauded the entire squad when he said, The team performed beyond what we had anticipated. They were carried by fine spirit and cooperation. They were one of the hardest blocking and tackling teams and played a brand of football that anyone who saw them play respected them for. ' Fourteen boys will be gone when the l957 season starts. And the graduating seniors that leave will be noticed. As Coach DeWitt observed, We don't lose seniors, we lose football players. 72 yi ff- , A if Ei I 'I mm., QQ m L 4.75: gf' 6? 'w 'G . ARROWS' END 5-YEAR DROUGHL GET T0 STATE 'A' TUURNEY Five lean years for Watertown basketball en- thusiasts were ended this year as Coach Jim Marking's Arrow squad finally fought their way to the State A tournament held in Aberdeen March l4-l6. They went through the sectional tournament like a whirlwind, toppling previously favored Sisseton, 76-60, and in the championship game trampling Milbank, 75-53. The Arrows went to the big show with a lot of determination and desire to win, but tough luck and two losses dropped them into sixth place. Yankton, twice beaten victim of the Arrows, put the 30-year first round jinx to work on the Ar- rows as they pushed past the Purple and Gold, 62-54, but not until they saw their 22 point lead chopped to 8 points by a determined Lake City team. With the championship out of their reach, the Arrows settled down to dumping the Cinderella Flandreau Fliers, 63-47. The Arrows stopped Flan- dreau with their deadly full-court press. ln the battle for the consolation championship, the Arrows were edged out, 5l-46, by Aberdeen in a nip and tuck game on the Eagles' home floor. This was a climax to a very interesting and exciting season, which saw the Arrows take third place in the ESD conference, while a year ago they were in last place. The Arrows lost five can- ference games by a total of l7 points. Sioux Falls defeated them twice by two points, Huron once by one point and once by six points, and Aberdeen once by six points. The over-all season record was I2 wins and 7 losses. The Arrows scored a total of llO2 points, while the opposition amassed 986, The Arrows averaged 58 points a game, while holding the op- position to 5l.8 points. Eight Arrow lettermen will be lost at gradua- tion this spring, but four returnees will form a strong nucleus for the '58 squad. Always a threat no matter how far behind they were, the big factor in the Arrows' respectable showing this year was their great determination to win, stated Coach Marking in summing up the '57 season. 7 ' - . 4 5' ,sig A P I 'qw' V.
