VARSITY DEBATE TEAM
Waterford's varsity debate team completed its second year of interscholastic compe-
tition with a respectable win-loss record of 5 and 5. After reviewing a list of the schools
that offered us competition it is fortunate indeed that the .500 was posted.
The team, consisting of Ioyce Mayo and Jack White, affirmatives, and Pat Maxwell and
Sherwood Ebey, negatives debated the proposition supplied by the Michigan High School For-
ensic Association, "Resolved, that the United Nations should be revised into a World Federal
Government nowl "
Double wins were posted over Rochester in the opener, students here at W.T.H.S. saw
the split with the Howell team, Warren Township held us to a split, and the final regular de-
bate of the season saw the experienced Hamtramck team take a double win from the Waterford
regulars. However, that did not end the season for Patty and Sherwood as they went on to the
district meet in Flint. At the district meet they defeated Sandusky, but bowed out in the quar-
ter-finals to Hazel Park.
Rounding out the successful season, the debaters were guests of the University of Mich-
igan in the late spring. This convention honored the outstanding high schools of Michigan for
their fine job of debating.
The Detroit Free Press, which co-sponsored the above-mentioned gathering, presented
Waterford High with a wall plaque for excellence in high school debating. Individual mem-
bers received a certificate of merit. The Free Press has been sponsoring this type of pro-
gram for many years, and only last year presented W.T.H.S. a plaque for an outstanding per-
formance in the field of debate.
The picture above was snapped during a practice debate. Seated from left to right are
Joyce Mayo, affirmative, Thelma Lewis, chairman, Sherwood Ebey, negativefand Pat Maxwell,
negative. The speaker is Jack White, the other member of the affirmative team.
