ARROWHEAD The Hills newspaper, the Ar- rowhead, provides an opportunity for students to write articles of school news as well as feature articles with a more creative edge. The paper is headed by news editor Lisa Liu, features editor Jessy Lipschutz, copy editor Dennis Hwang and sports editors Michelle Roberto and Marc Scheinder. Jon Jeans is senior writer and music columnist. When publishing articles for school distribution, staff writers learn the responsibilities associated with free press. Advised by Mr. Manka, it is apparent why students on past Ar- rowhead staffs have succeeded in full-time positions with leading newspapers. For instance, Steven Kinney and Cathy Bugman work for the Newark Star-Ledger, and Paul Grzella is a feature writer with The Courier-News. Lenape Reunites ForThew Mural of Memories Our school is a microcosm of talented students. This is especially reflected in the murals located throughout the two buildings. As a result we chose as this year's theme, A Mural of Memories. The 1986-87 Lenape staff was directed by old and new faces. Mrs. Kim Gajewski returned for her seventh year as business advisor. Mrs. Mary Halliwell rejoined her after a two year layoff as co- literary advisor along with Mr. John Herdman, who is also class advisor. When asked about their cooperative effort Mr. Herdman responded, This year's Lenape will be the finest book in Watchung Hills history. Together Mrs. Halliwell and l have made changes and added more creative graphics to the book. This has been a learning experience for both of us. The uproar over the senior write-ups was quite disturbing, commented Mrs. Halliwell. Once the seniors heard our reasons for the careful editing of the write-ups, I think they became more understanding. One thing that must be kept in mind about the production of the Lenape is the countless hours of work involving Mr. Herdman, Mrs. Gajewski, the staff and editors. and myself. No one has the right to blindly criticize the book until he or she sees the hard work it takes to produce Lenape. In order to eliminate the long afternoons and evenings after school, the advisors introduced a course entitled Publications l and II to the curriculum committee. This course will teach the journalism, photography, and design skills necessary to producing Lenape. This may help create a more professional book while allowing students to explore the fields of publishing, graphics. and communications. It may open a new door for future career choices, said Mrs. Halliwell. This year's staff was led by editor-in-chief Michele Costanzo. 'lShe assisted the other section editors in meeting deadlines. Michele was our link to the staff and a fine leader as well, said Mr. Herdman. The essential fabric of the book, the photographers, were led by Chris Chrobok, photography editor. No one worked as hard as Chris. Her photographs prove her to be an extremely talented and creative young woman, commented Mrs. Halliwell. This was one experience Chris will never forget! Other editors included: Gina Falvo, senior section; Michelle Soletto. sports section; Marie Ivanov, faculty section; Julie Currie, activities section; Sally Farrell, advertising section; and Ann Levine, underclassmen section. Since the book must raise its own funds, ads are an integral part of Lenape. Sally has done a superb job organizing sales and contacting advertisers. This years Lenape staff, said Mrs. Halliwell, should be proud of the book. They've done a fine job! l 4 Antivitin: Activities editor Julie Currie and Mrs. Halliwell preparing one articles for the activities section.
