IUI Society The National Honor is a school and community service organization comprised of a distinguished group of juniors and seniors who previous- ly demonstrated a higher level of character, scholarship, service and leadership. The NHS meets monthly and tutors students throughout the year. This year's NHS was busy in many areas. They continued to spon- sor a young Philippine girl named Emily. In the fall the group initiated a school grounds landscaping project, held their annual induction ceremony and reception, and ran the candy cane-o-gram sale. At Christmas the members participated in the com- munity caroling organized by the w r- A, Nike Club. Each year two senior members are selected to compete as semi-finalists in the NHS National Scholarship competition, which awards $1000 scholarships for the studentsi freshman year in college. The program has two primary goals: to help students secure marketable skills so that they may enter the labor market as com- petent workers and to provide a smooth transition between school and the working world. These selected juniors and seniors spend a portion of each day in school studying English, history and physical education. The remainder of their day is spent on the job in areas such as carpentry, masonry, print- ing, mechanics, plastics, and animal husbandry.
