Junior Statesmen Continue to Excel The Junior Statesman of America is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, student run organization. It is sponsored jointly by high schools and the Junior Statesman Foundation as an extracurricular sociai studies activity throughout the U.S. The purpose of the organization is to teach high school students about government, to help them develop and polish their leadership skills, to encourage critical thinking, and to transmit knowledge necessary to insure active, informed citizenship. Junior State chapters organize student debates, promote political awareness and participate in regional and state conventions each school year. Seniors using their lounge priviledges. 19: t Nancy Hoge and Debbie Bruno contribute to the club's discussions. The grade level council for the class of 1987 is led by the able hands of Natalie Albert. While the object of the council is to govern the senior class, their primary issue is to raise money for the Senior Prom. This year the G.L.C. raised funds by selling jewelry, cookies and candy, McDonald's hamburgers, magazines, and the like. Nancy Hoge and Darryl Cilli, the co- chairpeople of this year's Prom Committee, planned a magnificent event affair in the main ballroom of the Hanover Marriott with music provided by Leonard Bornstein Entertainment. Senior Ann Marie Ambrose spearheaded the celebration of Clifford H. Fox Day. The combined efforts of the seniors and the All- School Council provided retiring Social Studies teacher, Mr. Fox, with a good-bye benefitting his 25 years of service to W.H.R.H.S. Activities 195

SADD Combats With Contracts John Mcllwaln and Advisor Mrs. deBerjeols discussing the meeting tAbovei. President Nancy Hoge speaking with her offloers. tBeIowi. The purpose of the SADD program is to organize high school students to combat the i661 killer of their age group: death due to drinking and driving. Sadd's four goals are to help eliminate the drunk driver and save lives, to alert the high school students to the danger of drinking and driving, to conduct community alcohol awareness programs, and to organize peer counseling programs to help students who may have con- cerns about alcohol. The Watchung Hills' chapter of SADD began four years ago and has grown considerably to include over 300 students. The 1986-87 executive committee includes these fine members: President Nancy Hoge, vice-president Mark Mraz, secretary Stacy Perelman and treasurer Jessy Lipschutz. The committee chairper- sons consist of: presentations Suzy Starr, membership coordinators Cin- dy Rizzi and Kerry Caffrey, fund rais- ing coordinators Patricia Sells and Michelle Gilardi, publicity coor- dinators Natalie Albert and Glen Dreyer, Safe Rides coordinator John Mcllwain, and Advisor Mrs. Angela deBerjeois. Saddis objectives are to have the freshmen sign the SADD contracts and to offer various presentations to be carried out successfully. The SADD council believes that making students aware of this problem is the first necessary step in combating drunk driving, because ignorance is no excuse. Mi addition to the assemblies throughout the year, SADD uses other methods to raise public awareness. Tactics include monthly meetings, posters, P.A. an- nouncements, and special reminders on the place setting at the senior prom. The success of the SADD organization can be attributed to the positive peer pressure which has been generating throughout Wat- chung Hills. As a sponsor of the Safe Rides program, SADD is even able to influence people in the community. The addition of underclassmen to the executive council will insure success for the future of the SADD program. Activities 197
