As the years go by, we add different details: friends, teachers, parties, football games. They all become a part of the picture. In the end we all have our own special mural 9f memories, each a timely masterpiece. The Lenape Staff of 1987 is proud to show this creative collection. We feel that each of us is an artist in our own special way. We hope there will be as much color in your future as there has been in your past. Michelle Soletto . at ? Four of the team's most celebrated swimmers have been Stephanie Wriede, Nathalie Wunderlich, Sue Whalen, and Dierdre Wilton. Aside from their swimming abilities, the team is also proud to display their diving ability. Nicole Bunker, a junior at Watchung Hills, won the Mid-State Conference and Somerset County tournaments isetting new records at eachi, as well as placing 6th in the state diving competition. President Nancy Hoge speaking with her offloers. tBeIowi. The purpose of the SADD program is to organize high school students to combat the i661 killer of their age group: death due to drinking and driving. Sadd's four goals are to help eliminate the drunk driver and save lives, to alert the high school students to the danger of drinking and driving, to conduct community alcohol awareness programs, and to organize peer counseling programs to help students who may have con- cerns about alcohol. The Watchung Hills' chapter of SADD began four years ago and has grown considerably to include over 300 students. The 1986-87 executive committee includes these fine members: President Nancy Hoge, vice-president Mark Mraz, secretary Stacy Perelman and treasurer Jessy Lipschutz. The committee chairper- sons consist of: presentations Suzy Starr, membership coordinators Cin- dy Rizzi and Kerry Caffrey, fund rais- ing coordinators Patricia Sells and Michelle Gilardi, publicity coor- dinators Natalie Albert and Glen Dreyer, Safe Rides coordinator John Mcllwain, and Advisor Mrs. Angela deBerjeois. Saddis objectives are to have the freshmen sign the SADD contracts and to offer various presentations to be carried out successfully. The SADD council believes that making students aware of this problem is the first necessary step in combating drunk driving, because ignorance is no excuse. Mi addition to the assemblies throughout the year, SADD uses other methods to raise public awareness. Tactics include monthly meetings, posters, P.A. an- nouncements, and special reminders on the place setting at the senior prom. The success of the SADD organization can be attributed to the positive peer pressure which has been generating throughout Wat- chung Hills. As a sponsor of the Safe Rides program, SADD is even able to influence people in the community. The addition of underclassmen to the executive council will insure success for the future of the SADD program. Activities 197 Safe Rides Enters Its Second Year of Service In 1985 two students, Nancy Hoge and John Mcllwain, recognized the problem of drinking and driving which was posing a threat to their lives and the lives of their classmates. The only difference be- tween these two teams during the competition is during the varsity match they asked 27 questions, while during the junior varsity match they asked 25 questions. The varsity co-captains are Chris Lenzo and Rob Oppenheim. The junior varsity co-captains are Debbie Landau and John Chow. Awards won by this club are: '82-83 - state champions, '83- '84 - second place in the league, '84385 - second place in the league, and '85-86 - second place in the league. Cheri Papandrea speaks of a new strategy for the team. Frank Hwang reviews information for upcom- ing competition. Activities 203 T Future Problem Solvers The Future Problem Solving Pro- gram is a national organization dedicated to training minds to solve the most vital problems that face our civilization. Groups of four students attack such knotty issues as nuclear waste, the greenhouse effect. nuclear war, chemical pollution, family breakdown, starvation, etc. Skills in brainstorming, analytical thinking, creative imagination and group cooperation are enhanced. The program has caught on all over New Jersey high schools with close to 100 involved. Almost every year Watchung Hills has placed in the top five, qualifying for the state finals at Rutgers. Twice, we have won first place for execution and a third place for problem solving, sad Mrs. Vilain, the team's advisor. Kyle Young balancing out his abilities in solving the world's problems. Activities The 1986-87 Math Team MATH TEAM The Math Team participates in the Central Jersey Math League iCJMLl which holds 8 contests per year at local schools. They also participated in the New Jersey Math League iNJMLl which holds 6 contests per year in our own school. The CJML contests are usually the first Wednesday of each month from Oc- tober to May, while the NJML con- tests are usually the first Tuesday of each month. In the January CJML contests the Math Team was fifth overall out of 26 schools. At the conclusion of the year, the highest scoring participant from each school receives a CJML award. Students who participate in 6 of the 8 contests receive a Certificate of Merit. If a student is among the top scores in the league she or he also receives appropriate recognition and is eligible to participate in the ARML, a regional math contest for schools in NJ and neighboring states. This years Math Team was led by Ms. Camporini, who commented, llThis year's group strove to achieve meritorious positions within all the league participants. They should be quite pleased with their work. Activities 205 IIallUl lal I IV! The program has two primary goals: to help students secure marketable skills so that they may enter the labor market as com- petent workers and to provide a smooth transition between school and the working world. These selected juniors and seniors spend a portion of each day in school studying English, history and physical education. The remainder of their day is spent on the job in areas such as carpentry, masonry, print- ing, mechanics, plastics, and animal husbandry. The purpose of COE is to bridge the gap for secondary school students between the termination of the secondary school experience and the beginning of a career. On- the-job experiences are included in the related class in school. On May 27 the students celebrated the annual Employer Appreciation COE Bridges Gap Luncheon. At this time the students invite their employers to a luncheon to show their gratitude and apprecia- tion for the training they have re- ceived. Fund raisers like doughnut sales and canisters containing candy and nuts enable the students to pay for their employers' lunch. Dienene William shows confidence in her secretarial work. Christin Kulkaski enjoys her associations at Chubb. At the end of each year five awards are given out. If a student has been involved since junior year he may receive Most Improved At- tendance or Most Improved Average. Best Attendance and Best Average as well as Outstanding COE Student may go to anyone. Activities 209 Graphic Arts Club The Graphic Arts Club promotes greater opportunities for students of advanced graphic arts courses and perfects skills while instilling knowledge in graphic arts. It also helps to make students more aware of career opportunities, post- secondary offerings and availability, and the promotion of avocational in- terests related with the graphic arts industry. Mr. Goettsch, the club ad- visor, explained the various activities of the group. We would like to get involved with fund raisers. The club has gone on short field trips to local printing facilities including Deb-Lynn Screen Printing of Warren. The club also participates in open lab periods after school during which time the members work on projects such as: screen decals, photographs and brochures, and bumper stickers. The paper is headed by news editor Lisa Liu, features editor Jessy Lipschutz, copy editor Dennis Hwang and sports editors Michelle Roberto and Marc Scheinder. Jon Jeans is senior writer and music columnist. When publishing articles for school distribution, staff writers learn the responsibilities associated with free press. Advised by Mr. Manka, it is apparent why students on past Ar- rowhead staffs have succeeded in full-time positions with leading newspapers. For instance, Steven Kinney and Cathy Bugman work for the Newark Star-Ledger, and Paul Grzella is a feature writer with The Courier-News. Activities 213 Lenape Reunites ForThew Mural of Memories Our school is a microcosm of talented students. This is especially reflected in the murals located throughout the two buildings. As a result we chose as this year's theme, A Mural of Memories. The 1986-87 Lenape staff was directed by old and new faces. Mrs. Kim Gajewski returned for her seventh year as business advisor. Mrs. Mary Halliwell rejoined her after a two year layoff as co- literary advisor along with Mr. John Herdman, who is also class advisor. When asked about their cooperative effort Mr. Herdman responded, This year's Lenape will be the finest book in Watchung Hills history. Together Mrs. Halliwell and l have made changes and added more creative graphics to the book. This has been a learning experience for both of us. The uproar over the senior write-ups was quite disturbing, commented Mrs. Halliwell. Once the seniors heard our reasons for the careful editing of the write-ups, I think they became more understanding. One thing that must be kept in mind about the production of the Lenape is the countless hours of work involving Mr. Herdman, Mrs. Gajewski, the staff and editors. and myself. No one has the right to blindly criticize the book until he or she sees the hard work it takes to produce Lenape. In order to eliminate the long afternoons and evenings after school, the advisors introduced a course entitled Publications l and II to the curriculum committee. This course will teach the journalism, photography, and design skills necessary to producing Lenape. This may help create a more professional book while allowing students to explore the fields of publishing, graphics. and communications. It may open a new door for future career choices, said Mrs. Halliwell. This year's staff was led by editor-in-chief Michele Costanzo. 'lShe assisted the other section editors in meeting deadlines. Michele was our link to the staff and a fine leader as well, said Mr. Herdman. The essential fabric of the book, the photographers, were led by Chris Chrobok, photography editor. No one worked as hard as Chris. Her photographs prove her to be an extremely talented and creative young woman, commented Mrs. Halliwell. This was one experience Chris will never forget! Other editors included: Gina Falvo, senior section; Michelle Soletto. sports section; Marie Ivanov, faculty section; Julie Currie, activities section; Sally Farrell, advertising section; and Ann Levine, underclassmen section. Since the book must raise its own funds, ads are an integral part of Lenape. Sally has done a superb job organizing sales and contacting advertisers. This years Lenape staff, said Mrs. Halliwell, should be proud of the book. These girls should be complimented, for they do not receive remuneration for their time. Library Aides Are Links Between Books and Students The library aides are here to help keep the library running and to help give service to the school, said Mrs. Juanita Collier, librarian. Each one of the members works one period of the day in the media center. The members of the club are: Mohan Viswanathan. Mary Kamperman, Sarah Maynard, Bena Teo, Sarah Werbel and Brett Nusser. As a library aide the student can develop a sense of leadership in a working environment. This quality will be invaluable to students in their future endeavors. Box 216 Gillette, NJ 079 5 Mr. Fox poses for a mug shot. A typical day with Mr. Fox Goodbye Mr. Fox For the past 25 years Mr. Clifford Fox has been creating a stir amongst the students at WHRHS. Not only has he been giving US History and Government classes a new meaning, he has also added a new dimension to the word learning. His students have not only learned about facts, they have also learned about themselves. Mr. Fox has challenged all of his students to look within and find out what makes them unique in all the world. A list of the many ways Mr. Fox has effected our lives would be unending, but there are a few that can not go unmentionedi Mr. Fox led the AII-School Council for his en- tire time at Watchung Hills. Under his direction, the council made many improvements, such as new trees on the school grounds. as well as a number of rewarding pro- grams, such as the senior scholarship. He also lit up our lives with the hysterical exploits of Sir Charles Lamprey - the ever present. never seen hero of the Hills. Possibly one of the biggest events that Mr. Fox has been noted for has been the monthly debates held in his US History 2 classes. These debates, like the man himself, were anything but ordinary. He made his students treat the debates and themselves very seriously. He required them to dress in formal attire and present their ideas in a very professional manner. Not only did these debates ,cause students to think about important issues surrounding our lives, but they also promoted a sense of self-esteem and overall importance. This is a prime example of the Htrue learning Mr. Fox has instilled over the years When Mr. Fox announced his retirement this year, the news was met with tears and long faces. Yet. the sadness slowly subsided when we thought of the countless precious memories he left locked within the walls of WHRHS to be cherished forever. On Jan. 14. 1987, Mr. Baly dedicated the day in honor of Mr. Fox, to be simply called Mr. Fox Day. This is the least Watchung Hills could do for a man who has brought so many new and exciting horizons to our lives. We the staff of the 1987 Lenape would like to dedicate this year's yearbook to Mr. Clifford Fox in honor of all the things he has done for our school, both academically and personally. We only hope for happiness and luck in his retire- ment, and we send our love always to this special man who will have a place in the hearts of all those lucky enough to have been touched by his magical aura. .HSit down and be quiet! OK. let's take attendance. HClass over! Dedication r 1 Black vs. White in Howard Beach ipazgsaizueg 139 5,191 Mo awoa Laal. Inlllu lea UI JHI.
