Physical Education Builds Up When the school year began in September, three new ideas were put into operation in the Physical Education Department at Wat- chung Hills: elective physical education courses; co-education activities; and a credit- no credit grading system. Actually the major change e one that entailed the greatest degree of program shuffling, planning, utili- zation of space and personnel - was the change from the traditional prescribed, uni- form curriculum to an elective program. Sports appreciation, sports officiating, self defense for women, weight training, weight control, and modern dance are a few of the new additions to the curriculum. The adaptive gym, in the new wing, was opened early in February. It is equipped with such familiar items as ropes, mats, wall pulley weights, parallel bars, ping pong, etc. In addition to these, a universal gym machineb has been added. The apparatus has 16 totally independent stations to exercise the various parts of the body. The universal gym is also considered part of the depart- menfs resource center and may be used at times by students not in the adaptive pro- gram for exercise and body building. As Watchung Hillst appearance has changed in so many ways, it seems the changes made by the high schooPs physical education department are certainly for the better. 33
