He received his commission as a naval officer through the Aviation Officer Candidate program in January 1979 and was designated a naval aviator in February 1980. In August 1980, upon completion of training in the SH-3H Sea King at Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 1. he reported to Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 15 embarked in USS INDEPENDENCE QCV 621 with Carrier Air Wing 6 During that initial sea tour, he completed two deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean His operational assignments included: a tour with the Nighthawks of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 1611986-1988185 safety department headg as officer in charge of the Fleet Angels of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1. Detachment 3 11990-1991 J during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm while embarked in USS TRlPOLl lLPH 101, USS TARAVVA tl.HA 11 and USS OGDEN QLPD 575 and with Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 8 11991-19935 as the operations department head. ln December 1995. Captain McNamee was assigned as executive officer for the Chargers of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 14. embarked in USS INDEPENDENCE twith Carrier Air Wing 51 in Alsugi, Japan. ln March 1997.
