Ensign David Wayne Whitman, who conceived the artwork For the Stinger's Tale, was killed in a crash on 2 February, 1955, while the WASP patrolled olit the coast ol: Formosa. To Dave Whitman, For his contribution to this book and his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, the 19514-55 cruise book is humbly dedicated.

It is our hope that this book will help you understand how 3,000 men can live and work together encased in one steel hull 5 how a community embracing almost every known trade and proliession is organized, balanced and integrated so as to create the maximum quality and quantity ot our end product...air power. Cn our ship, every man Fills a key billet. Without his hard work and loyal, enthusiastic support the whole machine would suliter, it indeed it could Function at all. This Feeling ol: mutual dependence and support is retlected in our ship's spirit, our pride in the deeds oi: the WASP and Air Task Group One, and our determination to ever enhance their reputations.
