The local citizens. however seemed more staggered by Philco, lVestinghouse. and. particularly, Hollywood, lor they were enthralled at the sight of Paulette Goddard in a Medici Palace, Claudette Colbert in a .Iapanese prison camp, and Cliyia De Havil- land in a snake pit. And ol' course, we visited the Grand Bazaar. that in- trotters. credible maze of filthy tunnels which housed some 5.003 shops. These shops sell everything from sales to socks at prices so low you simply can't afford them. ISTANBUL, city ol' intrigue and mystery, ol' shadows and violence, of fabled wealth and lantastic corruption, of shishkabob and Singer Sewing Machines-here was a new and unique place. Here was XVest meeting liast, new meeting old, shyster meeting sucker. XVe were fascinated by Istanbul's magnificent mosques inhabited by multitudes ol' Turkish rugs. NVe were amused by her dancing and wrestling bears and attendant gypsies, who, not so talented as the bears, wrestled but could not dance. And we suddenly felt a little less smug at the sight of the posters advertising the Harlem Globe- lstanbnl was wildly cosmopolitan: Armenians, French, Turks, French-Armenian, Turkish-Armenian, -Iews.
