ON JULY 8, 1952 while anchored off the beautiful shores of the French Riviera, an impressive ceremony was conducted on board as Captain R. S. Clarke took command of the Stinger.', Captain Clarke arrived by way of London, England where he served as Assistant Naval Attache for Air. He has been in Naval Aviation since 1928 when he began his training at NAS Pensacola. Since receiving his wings, Captain Clarke has seen duty in ob- servation, experimental, fighting and patrol squadrons and served as Land- ing Signal Officer aboard the USS LEX- INGTON from 193 5 to 1937. His staff experience consists of tours as Chief of Staff to Commander Carrier Division FIVE and as Administrative Aide to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. In 1944 Captain Clarke commanded the USS PETROFF BAY and following a tour on the staff of ComCarDiv FIVE took command of NAS Los Alamitos, California. In 1948 he became a stu- dent at the National War College in Washington, D. C. Following the change of command ceremony at Cannes, Captain Clarke spoke to us as follows: The beriod of the past few a'ays has thoroughly demonstrated and justified the excellent rebutation the VVASP en- joys within the FLEET. It is with great pleasure and feeling of humhleness that I have the honor to command this ship.
