n 1 1 l I l 1 FI 1 Returning to the flight deck, we find the helicopter airborne and the planes ready to he catapulted. No time is wasted. The launch is smooth and efficient. It is pretty much routine, if there could he anything routine about an activity that can never throw of the possibility of death. The deck is soon cleared as jirst the jets, then the apropsv abandon their home. Below, in one of the ready rooms, a squadron operations ojjicer puts out last-minute instructions before his men rise and go up in their planes. On the gun sponsons all is in readiness for the simulated attack on the ship that our aircraft will soon conduct. Guns are trained out to the Hair readyv and the crews await further commands. The track- ing drill drags on, sometimes thrilling, sometimes relaxed, and a quick cup of coffee is eagerly downed. In Main Engine Control the watch is quick to answer the speed changes ordered by the bridge, while up in the aerology lah tomorrow's weather is carefully and sys- tematically guessed at.
