During its existence, the Air Group has operated from the USS pGHAMPLAIN QCVS-395, USS RANDOLPH CVS-15 4 7, USS luSS1zX QCVS-95, and, of course, from the USS WASP QCVS-183 71W E ' ' ,, '1 o , he mission of LVSG-54 is the detection, tracking and destruc-l tion of enemy submarines in time of War. The Air Group fills a solid segment of our nation's first line of defense by remaining ready to defend the sea lanes and approaches of our nation. Heffernan with Commander 4 'lv Rgbert C, Kennedy as executive officer. The officers carry out 1 v . .1 the necessary functions of administration, maintenance and op- 1 erations in addition to flying. i 1 Of the 169 enlisted men, the majority are assigned to the maintenance department whose responsibility it is to keep each 5 aircraft in a stage of constant readiness. The remaindera assigned to supporting jobs that range from yeoman and personnel men to cooks and medics Aboard the squadron's S213 Trackers four man crews are re i constantly training to search for, detect, track, localize, and, if necessary, destroy submarines under all weather conditions.
