The department's nine officers and sixty-five men use their transmitters , flashing lights , receivers , signal flags, teletypes, nancy , bunny tubes , big eyes , and tons of paper in an effort to keep everyone well informed of what they need to know. Without boasting, COMM provides and operates the equipment that enables the ship to talk with WASP aircraft, that allows the staff to communicate with higher command on shore, that informs the SUMNER that she is to act as plane guard, that tells our embassy in Oslo that WASP will need fresh milk upon arrival, and occasionally, lets the nervous Third Class in B Division know that he is finally a father. The functions of the Operations Department is not only to plan, but also to carry out a basic idea from conception to completion. To assist in giving life to a mission, the Operations Department is sub-divided into several units. Combat In- formation Center and Sonar are the sensors and voices of the nerve center using their complex electronic equip- ment to search and communicate with other units of the team. Meteorology provides environmental information and the Electronics branch maintains the sensors and the voices of these sub-divisions. Niedbala VAW-121, Detachment 18 provided WASP with Eyes of the Fleet. Flying the E-1B Tracer Qmore commonly called Willy Fuddl, the four-man crews consisting of pilot, co-pilot and two air controllers afforded the vital link between airborne anti- submarine forces and WASP, The FUDD also provided WASP with radar search Qfor surface surveillance, submarine snorkle and periscope detectionb, automatic and manual radio relay as well as radar relay QBELLHOPJ. BELLHOP gives the force commander a greatly extended radar horizon for better control of surface and airborne forces. The FUDD controllers monitor aircraft, provide safety of flight information, and steer them home if required. We of Detachment 18 have enjoyed serving WASP and CAG-54 and look forward to sailing with our shipmates on later cruises. Until then f th F , rom e UDDERS of Ready Room Two, HONK, HONK.
