t 22 - 23 September The Cold war in liquid space continued today in OVGFCGST skies as TF 402 steamed on, leaving a course strewn with ghostly submarines. ln the deadly game of blind man's bluff, TF 402 improved her skill today as a number of submarines were killed and turned loose to sulk in the depths, while far above, the quiet war of listening continued. For the men lighting this silent war, it is reducedta hours of fatigue, dreary routine, and numbing watches. It is fought in a dark Center of Combat information, where a young man sits bent over a radar scope, on the red-illuminated flight deck of an aircraft carrier, and on the many bridges of many ships, pitching on the dark medium which hides their adversary. The great con- test of antisubmarine warfare is made doubly hard because the submarine does not live by the rules of the contest- she can hide. The tension builds as TF 402 attempts to anticipate enemy movements and thrusts, and to thwart their designs with disclosure. Soviet shipping increased today as two Rus- sian destroyers tagged along, sometimes disappearing, butal- ways returning, The Soviet tug Aldon made its appearance again, as well as another Soviet vessel. The Soviets were timid today and kept a good distance, like sucker fish following ci shark, Mail was transferred from Wasp to the USS Ingra- ham by highline this afternoon. Forty-one bags zipped across the interval as line handlers pulled and slacked to keep them fl'Yt ll't0 lftgtaham was to transfer the mail to the other de- '0Y0fS- As another day in the NATO maritime exercise, l964, draws to a close, TF 402 is fast to realize that each fluff' C00D0f0lion is matched to a set of difficulties and one element of the team cannot do the iob alone. Team Work the name of this exercise, is the best ASW weapon ever developed 23 - 24 September Weather conditions llsocked in TF 402 today as a dense fog reduced visibility to llend of flight deck conditions. Air. craft were recalled from missions and brought back aboard Wasp under the guidance of the carrier controlled approach team. The final controller under these marginal conditions was Will Rogers Wheless, AO-2. With flightsafety paramount, aircraft were grounded and defense of the Force fell to the radarfsonar operators aboard the ships. Pilots were placed on alert in the ready rooms, waiting to launch with a break in the weather. Soviet activity was limited to one destroyer which has followed the force intermittently since midnight. Orange Forces took advantage of the weather to launch at- tack against TF 4l9. Successful attacks were directed at the Gearing and Chikaskia by Orange submarinesdespitetena- cious tracking by 'lsmall boys . At dawn the Force replenish- ed from the Chikaskia, AO-54. Later in the day a highline transfer of cholera vaccine for routine immunizations from Wasp to Keppler marked the fourteenth highline between Wasp and other ships of the Force in the last four days. The morning's highlight came in the form of payday for the crew of the Wasp as personnel gleaned together over 140,000 dollars. 24 - 25 September Aircraft were still being held on the deck due to weather. An Orange submarine took advantage of the absence of air- craft search during the night and penetrated the screen to launch a series of attacks on Wasp. With dawn, the weather cleared sufficiently to again commence flight operations at 08002. ln the afternoon the Force went to General Quarters as an Orange air attack approached.
