fi W NJ, F! V. THE FRESH Af fhe beginning of every school ferm a new and larger class enfers fhe gafes of Washingfon Union High, wifh a sfrong desire fo achieve a higher educafion. Af firsf if seems difficulf for fhe freshmen fo adiusf fhemselves fo fheir new environmenf, buf in a few weeks many of fhem are parficipafing in fhe school acfivifies, and so if was wifh fhe class of 1942. As is fhe fradifion every year, fhe freshmen were inifiafed by fhe seniors. lnifiafion Day is fhe dread of every Freshman Class, buf if furned ouf fo be a day of greaf fun. Every freshman came fo school in shorf dresses or shorf frousers wifh big bows and dolls. Wifh faces painfed fhey paraded fhrough fhe halls in fhe morning and in fhe affernoon presenfed a fine assembly of songs, dances, and recifafions fo fhe sfudenf body. Many sfudenfs have falcen parf in fhe dramafic, iournalisfic, scholasfic, and afhlefic acfivifies of fhe school. A large group of freshmen furned ouf for fhe Sfudenf Body Play and displayed greaf falenf in fhe Chrisfmas Pageanf, Freshman Assembly, and fhe Vodvil. Also many of fhe girls and boys wenf ouf for fhe various sporfs where fhey showed bofh good sporfsmanship and fine abilify. These can be looked upon as fufure sfars. The freshmen showed fhaf fhey also have fine scholasfic abilify by having seven members in fhe California Scholarship Federafion, and more hope fo ioin nexf year. 24

There were many boys on The VarsiTy FooTball Team as well as The BaskeTball and Baseball Teams. The girls also Took an acTive parT in The various sporTs and many were members oT The W Club. Because oT The enThusiasTic cooperaTion of all The sTudenTs Their TirsT candy sale aT The Gilroy TooTball game was a greaT success as well as Their second candy sale The TirsT nighT of The STudenT Body Play aT which homemade candy was sold.
