NM THE SOPHOMORE CLASS Wrth a long trarl st1ll ahead of them and wtth a l1ttle more experrence behrnd them the Sophomore Class took up the second lap of therr Journey October 22 1937 marked the date for the Sophomore Cotton Hop wh1ch was a cord and glngham affa1r The gym was decorated approprrately for the theme wlth balls of cotton lard among the greens Each person upon entermg the dance floor was presented Wllh a program decorated wlth g1ngham When the fmal hour of the dance approached everyone was regretful Thrs was the f1rst pro gram dance that had been held 1n a long trme and lt proved to be a great success The class s second undertakrng for the year was 1ts assembly program grven bers of the faculty and 1t was very amus1ng to the student body Every year 1t has been customary for the Sophomore class to take care of the museum case A chosen comm1ttee placed 1n the case mterestrng dlsplays on travel teaturmg artlcles from England Austral1a the F111 Islands and Alaska Another Sophomore duty IS decoratmg the halls and aud1tor1um for the Chrrst mas Pageant Thrs year s class used the tradmonal greens and candles but added a Nat1v1ty scene wh1ch was set up rn the trophy case The Sophomores showed excellent dramatlc talent They took part 1n and s.1bm1tted stunts for the Vodvrl and turmshed one ot the leads for the Student Body Play Many members of thrs class were also on the Hatchet Staff and rn the Scholarshlp Soclety 4222 l on April 22. J' 4' Q THE FRESHMAN CLASS Early 1n the fall a large number of wagons loaded wrth students possess1ng a strong desrre for advancement 1n educatron Jomed our tram The frrst few weeks were tryrng for them but after they had adJusted themselves to therr new sur roundlngs they went to work wrth great enthus1asm After the tradltronal Freshman lI'11l1Gl1OI'1 the class met to elect 1ts leaders and to make plans for the year The f1rst class act1v1ty was the Freshman Dance held on Frlday evenlng February l8 l938 A wlnter sports theme was carrred out The orchestra was seated agamst a background of snow crystals whrle a plcket fence covered wrth snow led onto the dance floor ln one corner of the gym a large snow man wrth h1s p1pe and broomstrck stood besrde a snow covered tree Wlth these effectlve decoratrons the lmpresston left rn everyone s mrnd was a w1nter wonderland Thrs f1rst venture was a success and those who attended had an emoyable evenlng The Freshmen whose duty 1t IS kept the trophy case 1n good cond1t1on by cleanlng 1t and by pohshrng the trophres The talents possessed by varrous members of the class were frrst dlsplayed at a program grven on Freshman In1t1at1on Day IOL1II'1Ql1Sl1C ab1l1ty was d1SCOV ered when there was a large turn out for the Hatchet staff The Vodvll and the Student Body Play proved that drarnatrc sk1ll could be found rn the class Scholastlc capab1l1ty was revealed when eleven Freshmen won places rn the Scholarshrp Socrety Thrs class of one hundred and elghty rs the largest ID the school and largest that has ever entered Washrngton Unron l-lrgh School 44 24 up ,. ff' ' ,t K , ,' I , .
