Dedication is Extended to . . Mrs. Maxie Arnett Mrs. Maxie Arnett was born in a log cabin in a mountain section of eastern Kentucky. Her parents owned and operated a farm and a country store during the spring and summer months and spent the winter months teaching in one-room elementary schools and conducting adult-education classes. When Mrs. Arnett was three years old, her parents moved to small college town about twenty miles from their farm in order to educate their six children. Mrs. Arnett ' s earlier years of teaching followed the pattern of her parents, one-room elementary schools and adult education classes. Some of her extra-curricular ac¬ tivities included sawing or chopping wood, building fires, sweeping the school-house, cooking lunch for the students, and sometimes making or repairing their clothing. During World War II, Mrs. Arnett married the boy next door and came to Washington, D.C. as an instruc¬ tor for the War Department. Two years later she returned to Morehead State University for her A.B. degree in education, and then to George Washington University for her M. A. degree in education. Having been a teacher for thirty-one years, Mrs. Arnett has taught in Fairfax County for thirteen years, including seven years as mathematics teacher at Irving. 2
