J asfefgaf The W H S Blue Lions led by Coach Gene Millard, soared through the 1959 60 bas ketball with an outstanding record, thundering by all but five of their contenders, their final record: lopsided 13-5. In the second game of the season, the Lions traveled to Wilmington for their first league game. A very tense crowd watched the Lions and the Hurricanes fight a gruel ing battle which ended in a sudden death overtime, from which the Blue Lions came out second-best with an 81-79 defeat. A strong Lion defense held a tough Xenia Buccaneer Five to fewer points than they were used to, but we still lost the game. After December 25 there was no stopping the fired-up Lion Five. They thundered through eleven helpless opponents with very few worries during that fabulous winning streak. The next-to-the-last game brought the Blue Lions against the Tigers of Greenfield, at Greenfield. In a rough and tumble see-sawing thirty-two-minutes, the Lions were first on top and then behind. The Tigers were Oflt for revenge, and got it by sliding by a hard- fighting group of boys by a score of 52-50. This was a tear-jerker for many, but the Lions still ended the season with a share of the SCOL title. The following night, the Lions hosted Pleasant View. They took a landside victory of the young Franklin County team 98-30, ending a very successful year. Left 10 fight, Row 1: Enochs, B. Helf ' h, D. W'll' , . Th . hn . .' ' ' Anders, S. Coach Marvin Merritt has great hopes for these boys as they reach Varsity age. The leader of the Lion quintet was john Thomas, freshman, who with the other members of the junior Varsity team, will be a credit to WHS in years to come. The most exciting game of the season was the last game of the year with Pleasant View. The J.V.'s fought hard all the way, but so did the Panthers.
