Go-Gfampzbns gfffe After a topsy-turvy season this year the Blue Lions of Washington Hi wound up, along with Greenfield, on the top of the S.C.O. The Lions were like a snowball roll- ing downhill, slow at first but gradually gaining momentum. The season opened here with Linden, the Lions bowing to them 23-O. With this game for experience the Lions then tackled Xenia, getting straight-armed 26-O. Then showing much improvement, but not quite enough, the Lions succumbed to Grand- view 19-7. But still keeping their spirit, they went on the next week to defeat Greenfield to the tune of 19-14. With this win under their belts the Lions went to Hillsboro where they had more of everything but points. When the final gun sounded the Indians had scalped the Lions 20-131 This was their only defeat in the S.C.O. this year. They then blew over to Wilmington where they took the wind out of the Hurricanes by the score of 32-2. Now with two wins to their credit they proceeded to add another by whipping Dayton Kiser 27-14, to make our homecoming complete. The Lions suffered a slight setback the next week when they lost to Bexley 39-20. However, they came back the following week to tame the Circleville Tigers 6-0, in the game of the year. The Blue Lions of 1954 sometimes came out second best in the scoring column, but never in team spirit. The team will miss the eleven graduating seniors, but with the experience gained this year the team will be a worthy foe in 1955. RALPH HICKMAN INC. They then trounced- Hillsboro 47-O, again checked Green- field 38-6, and ended the season by defeating West jefferson 27-7. This season ranked as one of the best in our Junior High team's history, as the Cubs racked up 203 points to their opponents' 20. Anyone who likes music and loves to sing is eligible. Choir is an actual subject, anyone taking it receives one-half unit of credit toward graduation. The choir has a new director, Mr. James Lochary. Under his guidance the choir practices for one hour every morning -first period. They sing all types of music with perhaps a bit more emphasis 'on religious types. An annual spring concert is presented by the choir which is the main event in their year. The approximately 30 members appear many times before the student body during the school year, in chapel programs and assemblies. The choir's members not only sing, but many are outstanding musicians in other fields. The choir accompanist is Diana Everhart, a junior. Hllillll In working toward tomorrow's world, we have to learn many new things. One of the most important of these is learning to express yourself orally. We of Washington High School are especially proud of our speech department headed by Mr. Thomas Mansell. One of the many different types of speeches given in class is the sales speech. Students become super-salesmen, selling a wide variety of products, such as vacuum sweepers, popcorn, cars, and clothing. Many actual sales are made. Students learn self-control, and are able to master the embarrassment and fear of appearing before an audience. Students may never completely lose the butterflies that accompany a public appearance, but they are much more at ease and have more poise. The speech department gives many perform- ers to activities around Washington High School, and usually by the end of the year speech students have appeared several times before the student body. John McWilliams selling bread to the speech class. Looks good, john! Mr. Mansell must have asked a tough question. Here's hoping Walter Hays knows the answer. Quote from Shakespeare's fulim Caesar. Give a record pantomime. Describe in detail a stage setting. Students from Mr. Mansell's dramatics class can do any or all of these things. This class, offered only to seniors, gives a thorough knowledge of the theater to all those taking the course. One of the highlights of the year is when the miniature stage set assignment is given. The students each read a different play, any one they want to, and then build a stage setting for it in miniature. These are very elaborate, interesting, and fun to build, giving the students first-hand knowledge in stage design. Jack Highfield, Jim Newland, Bob Dunton, Terry Wickensimer, and Mickey Milstead in a group discussion in dramatics class. THE COCA-COLA BOTTLING COMPANY The Paure That Refresher The tape recorder is widely used in dramatics class. Here Mr. Man- sell records a presentation by Bud Hill. Interest runs high in current movies, Broadway hits, and stage personalities. The class takes a poll among its members to determine their own choice for winners of the Academy Awards. The class not only studies current events in acting- circles but studies in detail the history of the theater. The members of the class have Performed many times before such groups as the Masons, Rotary, and the student body during assemblies. The class is fortunate to be taught by Mr. Thomas Mansell, who has spent many years in the acting profession and writing. r Many members of the Thespian Club are in dramatics class. Membership is earned by a point system based on work con- tributed in presenting plays. Once membership is earned, you are a lifetime member. Meetings of the twenty members are usually held on Monday nights in the various homes of the members. This year the Thespians went to New York City during Easter vacation. While there the members experienced many unforgettable events, seeing many television shows and Broadway hits. They will never forget the thrill of walking down Fifth Avenue in the Easter Parade. Funds were raised by Thespian-spon- sored sock hops, bake sales, donations, and many other projects. The main source of income for the trip was the annual Thespian play. This year The Night of january 16th, a comedy drama, was presented by the troop. The play was unique in that members of the audience participated, acting as members of the jury. In presenting the play the group learned many of the fundamen- tals of the acting profession. The group not only practices in the band room each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but also marches in the annual Memorial Day parade each springi This year they will present their annual concert at night by themselves without the aid of the grade school band.
