The deans office was a very busy place during the school year. Miss Evans signed thousands of excuses and Mr. White (as) signed many detention slips. A helper to all was Beverly Clickner, who kept things running smoothly and efficiently in the principal's office. Wearing socks in the hair became a fad for some of the freshman girls upon the suggestion of the upperclassmen, it seemed. With school underway several questionnaires needed to be filled out to keep the files complete. Tony Weatherly and Peggy Bandy Student Registration Sue Christopher and Jo Davis Joan Campbell and Jo Davis The Can-Can, the Hula, and other original ideas by our band delighted the crowds at the football games this year. Mr. Mansell's Christmas Play, 'The Runaway Star' was presented to the student body in the spirit of the Christmas season, leaving a spiritual effect with each person. 'Stardust,' the Thespian Play, was best remembered for the hilarious scene when the students arranged themselves on the stage as oranges, mousetraps, tadpoles, and other odd objects. Christmas Play Thespian Play Scenes 'P'umi The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade attendants arrived with the crown and football for the pre- game ceremony. A coronation ball for Queen Bonnie required a lot of work. Raymond Parks, Dick Pensyl, Roger Whitley, Shirley Kelley, Louise Stewart, and Jo Davis, student council members, got off to a good start decorating the gym with streamers. As to tradition, Queen Bonnie was presented a lovely floral arrangement of white mums. Souvenir programs were sold by Sr. Hi-Y. Giving the programs a onceover are Jim Cunningham, Roger Whitley, Larry Stephenson, Ronnie Camp- bell, and Jim Newbrey. 'rtyo Kec4 U up f 953 With the background of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, the lovely queen was escorted to her throne by Co-Captains Dave Smith and Dick Tracey. At last the big moment arrived. Queen Bonnie Washburn graciously acknowledged the cheering crowd. The seventh, eighth, and ninth grade attendants are shown as they entered the field. Queen Bonnie was surrounded by her pulchri- tudinous court of Sherry Ray, Peggy Bandy, Jane Van Voorhis, Sherry Bright, Phyllis Fisher, and Kathy Wright. “Peo iCe CLASS MOTTO Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud. The senior members of the team were introduced, and a round of loud yelling could be heard for blocks. At the pep assembly held in the high school auditorium, Miss Greenfield attended, in honor of our opponents homecoming. Jack Hickman really portrayed the part with spirit, and added much to the assembly's success. A saxophone quartet was organized this year. This group plays with a sense of natural harmony, and we hope they will continue with such a fine section next year. The hall monitor system was put into use for the second year by the student council. Those monitors do an excellent job of controlling hall traffic during class hours. A very familiar scene on the warm fall days was caught by our Sunburst camera when a very studious (?) pupil was found under his favorite tree. Nice?!! Many announcements of much interest were presented in skit form over the new public address system. Some voices became very well known in the early hours of the home room periods. A great hush descended upon the students in the auditorium. The impressive Initiation Ceremony of the National Honor Society had commenced with the members' processional down the aisles. I nervously recalled to mind my school record. Would I, in competition with so many other classmates, have even a slight chance of belonging to this organization? My thoughts were interrupted by the reading of the scripture. Following the prayer, speeches were given on the pur- pose of National Honor Society. In my muddled state of mind, only one sentence had any significance, but to me it was the most important. Only a few select Juniors and Seniors, who excelled in leadership, scholarship, character, and service in the school, would be admitted into this worthy organization. Suddenly, the speeches were over, and the names of the new members were being read. I slipped to the edge of my seat, my hands tightly clenched to prevent them from shaking. A large lump in my throat seemed to choke me. One by one, the other names were called. Then, through a haze, I heard my name. I stumbled to my feet, then slowly walked down the aisle to meet the waiting senior. As the little blue and yellow ribbon was pinned on my shoulder, pride took the place of my former numbness. I was a member of the organization which did so much for our school. Later, when I thought about the younger students who would be going through this ordeal, I decided to write on this experience. For the pronoun I is any student who strives toward the high ideals established by the National Honor Society. When Coach Bell arrived this fall -for his first year as Washington's head pig- skin mentor, he found an inexperienced team with only four lettermen from last year's veteran team. Around these four as a nucleus, he had to build a team to cope with the toughest schedule the Lions ever faced. Although inexperience and injuries hampered the progress of the team from the start, the Blue Lions of '53 have played well against some of the toughest opponents in this vicinity. The lid-lifter was with the Panthers of Linden McKinley. Although they were defeated that game, they fought back to an exciting and thrilling close defeat with the strong Xenia Central eleven. The Lions, then fell into a three game losing streak (losing to Cincinnati Western Hills, Greenfield, and Hillsboro). The Lions were on the prowl for victory when they hit Wilmington. This game being an SCO League game with the Lions coming out on top for their only victory of the season. Although the Blue Lions were defeated in their last three games, they played their best ball of the season then. Along with Coach Bell were three other new coaches in Coach Buck, Coach Beard, and Coach Leggett, with Coach Town- send assisting to complete the coaching staff. Though many times at the short end of the score, the indomitable Blue Lions of 1953 were never easy to conquer. Fighters all were they; full of do or die spirit. An aggregation of fearless line- men, plunging feetwinged backs . . . ALWAYS IN THE GAME . . . Proudly the Blue Lions placed four members on the South Central Ohio League team in this manner: Max Schlichter first string tackle offensively and defensively; Sam Marting first string offensive fullback; Glenn Milstead and Clark Foster receiving honorable mention. The team was especially proud of one of its members in the person of Max Schlichter who received the recognition of honorable mention on a state wide basis. Good luck to Max and the rest of the team and coaches. The Blue Lions this year were almost like a new ball team considering the loss of six lettermen. from last year's team. Still they made a very good showing, playing four out of the ten top teams of the state. The Lions started the season by beating Grandview 53-49. They were beaten by Bexley 58-34, Xenia Central 54-44, and Wilmington 55-54. The Lions came back and beat London 66-53, and Circleville 63-48, then they lost to Hillsboro 58-54. Over the Christmas Holidays the Lions journeyed to Hamilton to play in the Hamilton Lions Club Invitational Tournament. In the first round the Lions lost to Hamilton 68-39, then they came back to beat Cincinnati Taylor 59-54. Starting the regular season again the Lions lost to Greenfield 63-48, then bounced back to beat Hillsboro 78-43. The next game for the Lions was at Columbus, where they met Columbus North and lost 93-57. The Lions went on to Circleville and lost a very close one 64-62, coming back to beat Wilmington 62-53. When the Lions went to Greenfield they were again beaten by the Tigers 85-52. The Lions final home game saw Tecumseh beat them 76-48. -V GRETCHEN HIMMELSPACH TONI WEATHERLY A if BECKY JOHNSON First row: Bob Hunter, Bryan Phillips, Elton Griffith, Marvin Arnold.
