Q Q Ai flu I 'N .. . 5 3-.L i l sph, l I6 I, l xf' . silk-' P ,l rw, 6 The annual Class Night Dance was, as usual, a great success. IUNIOR CLASS PLAY Baby Sitter featured the antics of the mischievous junior and his baby sitter. The trials and tribulations of one of the more extreme baby sitting jobs were clearly illustrated by the excellent performance of the entire cast. SENIOR CLASS PLAY This year the Senior Class presented the play, Dear Ruth , a delightful comedy. This is a story ot a grand family mixup which involves a homesick soldier, a flustered fiance, a family of four, their cook, and sixty love letters. The story comes to an exciting close with two marriages and a hasty retreat to Florida. l'7l f We 4 I, 8 Miss Wanda Plantz, Mr, Brown's sec! retary, is the efficient and business-like aide in the superintendent's office. The school is indeed fortunate to have this capable person. Mrs, lvlargorie Belles is the queen di- recting the beehive of activity in the principal's office, There, assisted by re- liable office practice students, she co- operates with teachers and pupils alike in the handling of school business. 5 7 i 3 2 f . These two people help keep Washington High running on smoothly oiled wheels. Miss Marjorie Evans and Mr. Stephen Lewis, deans, deal with the problems ot school lite in an expere ienced manner, Sympathetic and understanding to all difficulties, both minor and major, they assume an important position in the lite of every high school student, lAncl they are human tooll lgl 0 ex ' On the opposite page you see a picture of the mystic Room 240 where the l9'5O Sunburst was born. For months the students wandered by, puzzled by the small portion of the window through which the room could be seen. Now the Sunburst Staff takes great pleasure in presenting the product of the work done in that room. This book was produced only through the cooperation of the students and members of the faculty. The teachers, the guides of the school, showed the students the way to a com- plete education. The students carried through the plans of their advisors-and had a good time. I l O q i .ls Stephen C. Brown Arthur E. Wohlers Superintendent Principal To the graduates of l95O, congratulations. Each of you has contributed much to your school and community. You have distinguished yourselves by your loyal- ty, character, personality, and high standards of conduct. The high esteem in which you are held by those of us in school is richly and justly deserved. lvlay the memories of your high school days and the experiences you have had here never be forgotten. The qualities that make you one of the finest groups of young people in America should remain with you throughout your long life of service. You have left a good record. The pattern you have set may well be followed by the classes which still remain in school. May you find success and enjoyment in your chosen vocations. STEPHEN C. BROWN, Superintendent. Sincere good wishes to each member of the class of l950. Each one of you has distinguished himself through service to his community, to his school, and to his family. As you continue on life's way, may you be able to plot your course better because of the experiences you have had during the past twelve years. As you graduate from Washington High School you are on the threshold of adult life. ln high school you have been living as adolescents and at the same time preparing for adulthood. Each of you has lived and prepared worthily as evi- denced by your wholesome day-by-day activities and your comprehensive plans for tomorrow. The great research consultant, Charles Kettering, suggests that much is in store for us when he recently said, We are in the kindergarten of uncovering things and there is no down curve in science. Thus there is much to achieve- for you and for those who follow. We are confident that as the army of seniors of l95O take over the com- mand we shall be in capable hands. Much success to you in your ventures. ARTHUR E. WOHLERS, Principal. i121 We thank the men of our school board tor interest in 'fp- X our school and for their patience and hard work in making many of our plans possible. This year a popular election was held to choose the president. Due to his proved leadership and ability, David Elliott won the election by a wide margin. Dave, with the cooperation of all the members laid a firm foundation for future classes. Although actual accomplishments were not too numerous, the council became an organized unit and set an admirable example for the succeeding classes. Some of the projects were: beautification of the building, the collection and counting of the money con- tributed for the March of Dimes, home room representatives sold tickets to the various school functions, and capably assisted the Sunburst Staff in successfully sponsoring the Stag or Drag night club dances which were held during the year and particularly after some of the basketball games. The athlete and debater were the schooI's heroes. There was little honor left for those not so favorably endowed with muscular strength and dexterity, or with oratorical aptitude. The hardworking pupil who kept to his books and assumed the real leadership in later life re- ceived comparatively little recognition and encouragement during his school days. After analyzing the basic requirements for good citizenship, leading educators proposed these four qualities for a new organization: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. These educators founded a new club, a club devoted to the develop- ment of these basic qualities. ln this school, as in many others, the club has successfully fulfilled the dreams of its instigators. Those students who have received this honor have found it made them more than just good studentsg it made them outstanding citizens. On August 20, l949, the Blue Lions started preparing themselves for a long, hard season. Each day they practiced, and each day they learned. Then came September l6. The Lions met Linden McKinley, They played a rough game but lost. Two more games followed, and they were ready for one of their biggest rivals, Greenfield. They went to Greenfield and won. ln the following game, with their spirits high, they brought through another victory. The next win was over Dayton Stiver, a rough and tumble game of l3 to 7. This victory ended the season. The squad next year will greatly benefit from this exper- ience. Although many of the members may never again play football, the fellows this year have gained much. The following night our boys were beaten by one point in an overtime game with Bexley. They were then quarantined ten days because a Wilmington player had contracted spinal meningitis. With only two practices after their quarantine, the boys were beaten by Greenfield. The Dayton Wilbur Wright game was cancelled. The Lions drew Aquinas in the tournament at Columbus. They were beaten 46-45, when an Aquinas player sank a basket as the gun cracked. Bob Alkire and Dave Sheidler received honorable mention on the All-Tour- nament team at Columbus. Ed Pensyl was chosen on the all S.C.O. team and Bob Alkire received honorable mention. The Reserve squad, with only Allan Grillot returning from last year's team, had to be rebuilt. jack Rettig played steady ball all season. Crosswhite, Van Meter, Dawson, C-rillot, and Arnold played very well. ln only two games did the boys show their power by beating Dayton Roose- velt and Wilmington. The Reserves finished the season with two wins and eleven defeats, Although the final scores were low, spirits were high and the boys never quit fighting. This year Coach Lewis lost john jordan, captain of varsity, and Brad Neff who graduated. We'll miss you fellows! i661 There is quite a bit to baseball that most people never hear about. Here are a few of the things that the boys go through in one season. First of all-calisthenics. Then the pitchers start warming up while the rest pair off and just toss the ball around. Fungo is next. ln groups of five or six, with one person at bat the ball is tossed to the batter so he can get his batting sight. Now the coach steps up and knocks a few flies to the outfield. Not wanting to neglect the infield, the coach knocks a few grounders to them while the outfield fungos. At lastl Batting practice, and the pitchers get into action. A short scrimmage of about five innings ensues while the coach picks the team. l67l These girls are the hardworking lr. High Cheerleaders. They were present at all the jr. High football and basketball games and really did a fine job. Next to them are two thrill packed action shots of the lr. High bas- ketball team. Coach Fred Pierson's Cubs won nine games and lost five. They finished third in a junior high tournament held at Greenfield. We're really proud of them. Coach Guinn had quite a turn-out for lr. High football this year. These are the boys that remained with the team throughout the season. They are fine boys and will someday compose successful varsity teams. The graduating class of i950 is leaving the river of the first half of the twentieth century and embarking on the sea of living and learning. Before we start on what we hope to be a successful and enjoyable new life let us go back and review some of the achievements and activities of the four years of this memorable class of l95O. ' We might all think of our school years as comparable to an ever widening body of water. Our first years of school seem as a tiny brook running clear and swift over smooth pebbles, but as years go by the small stream becomes larger and larger, sometimes running smooth and clear, sometimes dark and turbulent. The rocks are larger and the stream seems to have many treacherous bends and turns. There are many things, and people, that chart our course onward. Sometimes we wanted to go another way and do other things, but we were pushed gently but forcefully on and on. With our ship christened Education we started on our first voyage of high school train- ing, in i946 with a freshman crew of l32. We elected our President, Charles Campbellg Vice- President, joan Halidayg Secretary, Nancy Boylanp Treasurer, jack Deere, and our advisor, Mr. York. A fine group of officers, who, with the help of a cooperative crew guided by Mr. York, led us safely through the first year. Many started their first year of football and basketball, hoping to someday replace the boys that were graduating that year. Patty Eckle was chosen as the Queen's attendant. There were many clubs and organizations to join and a good many went out for the band of which we were all very proud. At the close of the year we had a picnic at Gardner Park. Time passed quickly and we were soon sailing into our sophomore year. Our class ad- visor was Mrs. Pensyl and under her leadership we elected David Brown as President, Bill Horney as Vice-President, john Thompson as Secretary, and jack Trimmer as Treasurer. Still we had a crew of l32 students most of whom entered into the year's activities with full steam. The boys who survived their first year of football were back for more. The basketball team was very good. Four students were chosen by the class for a free trip to Washington D. C. in honor of the Centennial. The band was fortunate in getting to go to Cleveland. We had many wonderful assembly programs. The Queen's attendant was Marilyn Van Voorhis. By i948 we felt we were true sailors and with new determination, we set sail with a smaller, but very sturdy crew, 98 strong. Clyde McCray was elected as our President, Roger Pope, the Vice-President, Mary Sue Belles the Secretary, jack Trimmer the Treasurer, and our class advisor, Miss Helen Hutson. 'Football and basketball hit a new height that year. The varsity had hopes of winning the championship but lost the last league football game to Circleville. The basketball team members were real fighters also. The junior class presented the play, Meet Me in St. Louis . The band had the honor of going to New York City. The Queen's attendant was Nancy Boylan. Our jr.-Sr. Prom followed an undersea theme. The sailing seemed pretty rough at times, but soon we reached that treasured island of summer vacation. All too soon our stay in that lovely vacation land was over and we realized with mingled regret and joy, that we were about to start the last journey as members of the crew for dear old Washington High, and that after waiting and serving four years to get out, we felt a little sad to think that soon we would be listed among the Alumni. By now our crew only numbered 94, but with new enthusiasm we started on the last voyage, re-electing Clyde McCray for our President. Clyde has done a fine job and we thank him. He had an able staff with jerry Dray as Vice-President, Dorothy Pyle, the capable Secretary, and Roger Pope, the Treasurer. To help guide us this year Miss Kathleen Davis was our worthy advisor. Our football and basket- ball teams didn't win a lot of games, but they learned sportsmanship, teamwork and the build- ing of fine character. l think l can say that the boys worked very hard but enjoyed their years of football with Coach Fred Pierson, and some wonderful basketball training under Coach Steve Lewis. Bill Horney was our football captain and Patty Eckle our very beautiful Queen. The Thespians presented the play, l Remember Mama , and the Senior Class, Dear Ruth , The year closed, in a whirl of excitement with the jr.-Sr. Prom, Baccalaureate, the never-to- be-forgotten Class Night, and Commencement. Many of us will sign on varied and different ships in the Educational lines next year. Some will see their futures in other fields, but no matter what the field of endeavor, here's wishing each and every senior, good fortune, health, and happiness. Good-by and smooth sailing to all our teachers and friends.
