Mr. William Cliff, Director I t Im , ..... .... ,,,,,, ll ' 5, 6 4' ,I 57 lllllllllllll l HTHE SOLDH Under the accomplished baton of Mr. William B. Clitt, lr., the Washington High School Band has risen to a place of prominence in the school, city, county, and state. Clad in smart blue and white uni- forms, the band proved to be as much of HTHE SAILC OVES HIS GENERAL'S FAME an attraction during football season as the football team. On April sixteenth, they presented their annual concert. The concert, as usual, was a great success. Members of the band were called upon to provide music for the junior Class Minstrel. This task was accom- plished in a competent and expert man- ner. We feel them well able to provide the music for our overture, the Alma Mater of Washington High School. THE STORY UNFOLDS . . rqcl I ir PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS To preserve its many happy moments shared in the pursuit of knowledge, to remember the scenes of our triumphs and activities, to relive the glories of our graduation, and to recall the friendly acquaintances of our four scholastic years, we present the first act of the interesting and picturesque drama of our high school days in the PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS . A play depends on its production and direction. We are fortunate that our school life has been guided by such experienced hands. 1 is . Q by ,-Si 1 9' Q 1 Q X Q lf!! Yi The l948 graduates of Washington High School have distinguished themselves by their character, personality, loyalty and high standards of scholastic achievement. The entire faculty and student body wishes them the best of everything that can be attained. Through their diligent study in the var- ious courses they pursued, they are better prepared to approach the goals they have chosen for their life's vocation. To each member of this class, l wish to say good luck and success in whatever you endeavor to do. Stephen C. Brown, Principal, Washington High School. Our l948 seniors have had twelve years of fine experiences as pupils in the public schools. On behalf of the community l salute you! For eleven years it has been my pleasure to follow the leadership of most of your class, and the memory is very pleasant. lt is a credit to the class of l948 that the members of the faculty hold you in high esteem. Your individual successes in life should not dim the memory of our regard for you in the experiences we have shared. A. B. Murray, Superintendent of City Schools. A.. B. Murray Superintendent, Dana Hyer, Clerk, Robert A. Craig, President, Thomas S. Christopher, Vice President, William C. Allen, Ray Brandenburg, Leonard R. Korn, Stephen C. Brown, Principal. One of the major characteristics of our Ameri- can scene today is our persistent faith in educa- tion. The advance of our people: in well-being, in comfortable living, in culture and refinement, in productive capacity, in usefulness as citizens, must, for the most part, be attributed to educa- tion, whether the latter has functioned directly or indirectly through leadership of the most able. During the annual election assembly, members of the Government classes presented the views on Student Councils, pro and con. Then during the annual mock-election the Student Council was voted on either for or against by the student body. The returns were overwhelming for a Student Council. Though too much has not been accomplished this year, the ball has been started rolling by the Class of l948. lt is up to the other classes to carry on with the Student Council and make it a living organ of Washington High School. 43 IUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President .,.................... .....,. As this panorama of activities unfolds, you will know the reasons for the after-class hours spent by your children at school. ln the years to come it will always afford us the greatest of pleasure to reminisce on the scene for which we have the greatest affection, The Set- tingsf' NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY S . 4 Q Washington High School has had a chapter of the National Honor Society EE LS since l933. This society was first organized in l903 at South Side Academy 3 in Chicago. At the beginning the students were inclined to emphasize too strongly sports and other extra-curricular activity and let their schoolwork slideg therefore, a new organization was designed to promote scholarship, service, and leadership. Among the students, membership in the National Honor Society is the greatest honor that can be awarded a student. The students will always have fond memories of their school paper, the Lion's Roar , which is efficiently edited and published by the members of the National Honor Society. The society is under the supervision of Miss Ruth Stecher. Enthusiastic over this victory, the Blue Lions encountered Chillicothe and lost by a sorrowful score of 7-6. Wilmington came to meet the Blue Lions. They were defending their SCO Crown. Even though our boys were in good physical condition, lived football, thought football, sacrificed all social activities, they lost by a score of 7 to 6. The Lions took Greenfield l2-7, but went down under Bexley in a heartbreaking l4 to 7 defeat. Coach Pierson and Coach Steve Lewis gave the Lions one of their famous pep talks, and the stirring motto, Sock 'em and Rock 'em was seen in the re- maining four games. 75 ' WMF' .. ,., va we-wg. The boys got off to a good start by winning 26 to 6 only to lose the following week to Circleville by a l2 to 31 score. On October l6 Xenia invaded our city, scoring in each quarter, to down us Z4 to 6. After losing their first three games, the Blue Lions finally hit their stride and edged out Bexley 35 to 26. The boys swept through all South Central League competition with the exception of Hillsboro, who edged them out by 3 points in the second encounter. That 3 point deficit proved to be the margin that kept the Blue Lions from winning their first championship in the his- tory of the school. Ending the season with a record of IO wins and 9 losses, the Lions traveled to Columbus to meet the Rosary Quintet. This game was one of the fastest and most thrilling of the whole tournament. The Lions after having a lO point lead midway through the third period were finally edged out with the help of the referees. With eight boys re- turning to next year's squad, the Blue Lions under the able and experienced coaching of Steve Lewis, are expected to avenge some of the defeats registered against them this year.
