HISTORY OF W. H. S. The first school held in YVashington was taught by Samuel Loofbourrow in 1813 on the east corner of what is now Paint and Hinde Streets. The second school was located on Market Street between Fayette and North Streets. The present high school site of about four acres was donated by Peter Wendell in 1854. The first building was replaced by a new building in 1884, but the present building wasn't erected until 1912. There was no formal program of education until 1874 when Supt P. Patterson set up an eight-year grade school with a three year high school. The students of high school age who were attending school in 1874 were given the privilege of completing a three-year course in two years. Three students 'took advantage of this. During 1939 an extensive building program was completed, which made it possible to organize a six-year High School. Since the first official classification of High Schools in 1903, VVashington has remained a first class High School, and il member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools :since 1910. Vocational, as well as academic courses, are now being offered. Through the Vocational departments it is possible to extend a more complete education to those wbo are not planning to attend college. Home economics, automotive and aviation mechanics, machine shop, and business education are offered. Our auditorium, in the new building, has a seating capacity of eleven hundred seventy-five. lVe have a beautiful Pilcher pipe organ with the pipes located in chambers on either side of the stage, while the movable console can be placed in the pit or on the stage at pleasure. page eighteen

SENICR CLASS E HISTORY As Father Time rolls by, we, the class of nineteen hundred and forty-six find ourselves at the end of our happy school days. In the year 1942, our somewhat timid but eager and proud class of one hundred and sixty-two students entered into our Freshman year. With the guidance of our class advisor, Mrs. Bailey, we elected Nancy Devins, President, Rosemary Eckle, Vice President, Shirley Sue Hayes, Secretary, and James Twining, Treasurer. We were well represented in the field of athletics with two of our boys on football reserve and two on basketball reserve. Music was a special interest also with sixteen members in the band, four in orchestra and one girl in the Triple Trio. Our Freshman year ended with a traditional picnic at Gardner Park. Following summer vacation, we returned, as more confident Sophomores. With Miss Davis as our capable advisor, we elected for class officers, Dan O'Brien, President, John Burr, Vice President, Helen McCoy, Secretary, and Wayne Rudduck, Treasurer. The year was brought to a climax with the Sophomore picnic at Gardner Park. Time passes by l Greeted by a new principal and several new members of the faculty, we tilted our heads proudly as we accepted the responsibilities of upperclassmen-beginning our Junior year. Miss Melson, our class advisor, assisted us in electing James Mitchell, President, Dan O'Brien, Vice President, Connie Pyle, Secretary, and Neil Davis, Treasurer, to lead the Junior class through an eventful year during which several served on the football team and in other athletic events. Many displayed dramatic talent in the Junior Class Play, Janie . The Junior-Senior Prom highlighted the year. Feelings were heavy last September when, as well-seasoned students, we launched plans for our Senior year. VVith Miss Melson as our class advisor, we elected Carroll Steele, President, James Twining, Vice President, Connie Pyle, Secretary, and Martha Burnett, Treasurer. P Helen McCoy was chosen queen for our Homecoming Game with Hillsboro. VVe are very proud of the Seniors who played in our high school band, which won the honor of first place at the Circleville Pumpkin Show. Also of our Senior boys who helped to make up the football and basketball teams. Too, we pay tribute to the Senior boys who left school to enter the armed forces. The Senior party was highlighted by a Variety show, which revealed more talent than we thought was among us. The affair was a semi-formal one, and although we had one of the best times we had had all years the thought was in the hack of our minds that this would be one of our Last big get-togethers. With a feeling of pride and a degree of satisfaction, we look back upon four busy years filled with accomplishments. VVe solemnly and humbly express our gratitude to each member of the faculty whose guidance and instruction, both in and out of the class room, will live with us as an academic monument of patience and understanding. For these inspirations we extend our humble thanks. JANET HODSON, Historian page ninrtren Y
