Class Pictured here at the right is Nettie Hegler Ballard, the only living member of the first graduation class in 1876. After graduating, she attended the old Cincinnati Wesleyan College for one year. She then attended Wellesly College. Mrs. Ballard has reared four children, all of whom have gradu- ated from VVashington High School. Three of her five grandchildren are also Washington High graduates. Mrs. Ballard has been a lifelong resi- dent of our city and now resides on East Street. The second member of the class of 1876 was Herhert B. Maynard. He attended Amherst Col- lege. After which he returned to Washington Court House where he married a local girl. He later moved to Chicago and from there to Water- loo, Iowa, where he was connected with the local Utility Company. He remained with this com- pany until his death in l9-1-3. The third and last member of the class was Ella Simpkins, the late Mrs. Kingham. After gradu- ating, she moved to Northern Ohio near Port Clinton and from there to Michigan. After teaching school, she was married to a Mr. King- ham. By this marriage there were two sons. Une son became a missionary to India. The other, who majored in science while in college, has written and published a Physics text book.
