Ta-ta-ta-Here goes another day in the life of Spurty Spirit. School . . . ooh . . . I love it! All these nice classrooms just waiting for the studes to come in and sit down to write some easy,' test or to fumble through a brilliant recitation . . . And everyday is like the one before, except, of course, when we have an experiment or a book report. Then again, there are days we have films, and twenty minute quizzes and panels and symposiums . . . oh dear, I could go on for pages and pages. I guess maybe the days are as different as day and night. And what days . . . First comes a gay morning spent in classes and study halls. Then comes that pre-an- nounced Cby your faithful stomachj lunch hour. Ah, those joyous moments spent in gleefully strolling down the hall and eating those delicious and greasy potato chips. CRuin more paper that wayj . . . Next comes an even gayer after- noon at the end of which, no one wants to leave, yet every- one runs for a bus . . . Yep, I think five days a week are just too few. IN TRIBUTE Knowledge gained through books is not the only necessary factor in the education of youth. There is also the learning to cooperate with one another in outside activities. Miss May Leete, in sponsoring welfare work in the Girls' Club for 26 years, has led many a sophomore girl to find not only joy in com- panionship, but also the gratification which comes from aiding the less fortunate. Through her extensive travels and exuberant spirit, she brought to her classes the realization that to be a good bookkeeper requires more than just accuracy and promptness. Now she is continuing to find joy in living through more travel and reading. Mr. Charles White will long be remembered as a successful and challenging history teacher. With a rnaster's degree from our state university, he was well equipped to help his students see how the past political and economic situations in our country in- fluence the present. He kept his students on their toes, gave them an excellent background, and helped prepare them for a better life. They will long remem- ber him for his sense of humor. After twenty-five years of service, he is now free t relax and enjoy his golf. Wy? WMM ls M MISS LEETE MR. WHITE , N HCDWARD MAULE Whenever we reflect on Washington's speech department, the colorful figure who was its director for twenty-five years becomes a tradition because of his untiring effort in state debate and forensics. Howard W. Maule, who passed away as the result of a heart attack August 15, l948, leaves an admirable record of achievement. With B.A. and M.A. degrees from Carroll College and the University of Wisconsin, he coached his school debate team to place first in the finals. In 1922, as president of the State Forensics Society, he came to Washington to build up our forensics teams, with the help of the debating societies. Mr. Maule worked with 'Tonians in the new field of State Debate and enabled them to take top honors in many competitions. His work in forensics has been hailed throughout the state. Washington shall always remember the example in leadership and fine teaching which has been so clearly set by Howard Maule. MESA! ly IN MEMQRY aff ll
