I8 ACADEMICS Mrs. Myrtle George attended the University of Illinois, Northern Western University and the Arizona State University. This is her first year at WHS. Mr. Emmett Murray is not only a counselor but he is the sponsor of American Field Service. The AFS is the organization which helps the exchange students find homes here and abroad. Mr. Murray conducts the inter- views at the beginning of the year to detemiine who will be the foreign exchange student for the following year. Mr. Bernard Jones has been a counselor at Washing- ton High School for seven years. He graduated from Ohio State University, University of Arizona and Arizona State University. During college he was All Ohio University Basketball star. Previously he was a basketball coach for nine years. His hobbies in- clude sports and travel. Counselors Guide Students in Problems on Campus Miss Hariett Leeke is not only a counselor but also a physical education teacher. She is the sponsor of thc girl's tennis team. Mrs. Violet Schroeder attended the University of Kansas and Arizona State University. She has her A.B. and M.A. degrees in education. She is a member of the P.T.A. board. This is her eighth year of counseling at WHS.

Calm and peaceful Washington High School rests after a busy school day. During the schedule hours over 1,800 students attend classes ranging from the lilmcrul arts to vocational training. The responsibility of a smooth running school rests on the shoulders of three individuals, the principal, Mr. Berry, and his assistants, Mr. Cosper and Mr. Irwin. ACADEMICS

MR. THOMAS A. PAGEL Mr. Pagel teaches Crafts and Physical Science at W.H.S. This is his second year here. Mr. Pagel graduated from Stout State College, Menomonie, Wis. He served as assistant J.V. football coach this year. MR. FRANK SALMON Mr. Salmon is head of the Art Dept. at W.H.S., and is sponsor of the Art Club. Mr. Salmon attended A.S.U., U. of Oregon, P.C., L.A. City College, and Bennington College. Mr. Salmon has traveled through many countries in Europe. Mr. Salmon introduces initiative thought to his art classes and encourages the use of creative imagination. Sometimes this is easier said than done. MR. FRANKLIN TAYLOR Mr. 'Taylor teaches Photography and Math at W.H.S. Mr. Taylor is sponsor of the Photo Club and is Photo Department Advisor for the Annual. Mr. Taylor attended Brigham Young University and A.S.U. He is presently working for an M.A. degree at A.S.U. Mr. Frank Taylor shows Bob Thema and Stuart Strong the finer arts of the enlarger and other equipment. ACADEMICS I9
