Seniors have a choice between Government-Sociology, Government- Economics, and Problems in Democracy. The first two are tradi- tional courses concerning the fundamental principles of our govern- mental system and a separate study of either of the two previously mentioned areas. Problems in Democracy is a course which deals with the problems of contemporary society. In this class, students are given the opportunity to express their own ideas, based on the fundamental principles of the democratic system, which they them- selves research and discuss. This course gives the students a deeper understanding of their government, preparing them for further political science studies, andfor their roles in society. The remaining courses, World History and World Geography, are elective courses. World History t'nvolves the study of man's culture as a result of his surroundings. The teaching of language is a two-fold plan which includes the in- troduction to a new language and the concurrent presentation of ideas in that language. A student just learning a new language is drilled in grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation of foreign sounds and definitions of basic words. After mastering the funda- mental rules of the language, the student is faced with the problem of expressing ideas using proper grammatical rules. He later starts to write, read and think in this new language. Aided by flms, visual aids and the language lab, students soon become fluent in their adopted language. They are then ready to study the literature, his- tory, and customs of the country in which their particular language is spoken. This gives the student a practical application of his new skills, as well as in valuable practice in the use ofthe language. Five languages are ojered as part of the school curriculum: French, Spanish, German, Russian and Latin. Students wishing to learn as much as possible in a specgqc language have the opportunity to study it throughout high school.
