'D ANNE LEHMAN, Reading A.B., M.A.T., Rockford College, Wilmington College. KA THLEEN HOJNA CKI, English B.A., Western Michigan University. The English courses ojer a basis for communication between students and teachers, between students and parents, and between the students themselves. Grammar and vocabulary are studied to form a strong foundation to work from in the study of literature. Literature adds to the vocabulary of the reader and also gives the student an under- standing ofthe abilities ofthe author to communicate his thoughts. Themes, essays and book reports are assigned by the teacher to give the student a chance to practice communicating his ideas formally, and much enjoyment can be had in reading or writing. Besides being able to earn recognition for publishing material, much pride can be had by an author with a creation of his own, be it prose, poetry, an essay, or a novel.
