STANLEY LOUISEA U, B-Band, B.M.E., Butler University. m usic Band, Orchestra and Vocal Music are the areas that are covered in the Music Department at our school. Students at Washington have always excelled in the feld of music. In Band, students as a group, and individually, study band tech- niques and prepare numbers for presentation at pep assemblies, foot- ball games, and special programs. The Orchestra is the more majestic area of the Music Department, working on material for presentation at special programs. This material varies between popular music of today andpopular music ofyears past. Vocal Music, or Glee Club, is the third area of music studied at Washington. In this area, we have many fne groups: The Mellowmen, The Mellowettes, and The Fitzy Minstrels. These groups present pro- grams at Christmas and Easter. The jield of study in our art department is a large one and many interests are incorporated in it. Basic Art serves as an introduction to most fields and mediums and is a prerequisite to other art courses. Graphics is advanced work in the fields of printing and drawing. Creative Crajts is an introductory course to three dimensional work with Ceramics as the advanced study in this area. Advanced Art or Studio Art is a two hour course in which the student has afree choice to do what he pleases in his chosen direction of expression. Under the supervision of the art teachers, students' work is regu- larly represented in the Scholastic Arts Contest which is initiated at a local level. Successful entries are then submitted for judging in New York City. Winners at the local and national levels are awarded Gold Keys. Scholarships are awarded to fnalists who have submitted portfolios to thejudging in New York. Washington High School ranks very high regionally and nationally in this competition with many scholarship winners to its credit. I5
